The annual Vern Coverdale Memorial Boat Basin Salmon Derby was won by Spencer Hornick of Spanaway with an 11-pound, 7-ounce coho caught in late September.

Mike Coverdale, whose father is the namesake of the derby, said a fair number of salmon were taken from the marina boat basin during the derby Sept. 15-Oct. 31, but Hornick was the only angler to bring a fish to the derby weigh station.

Hornick got a $100 gift certificate to Bennett’s Fish Shack for his winning entry. Coverdale said prizes for second and third places, and the youth prize, will be carried over to next year’s derby.
