Ilwaco 53, Willapa Valley 31

Willapa Valley was held scoreless in the second quarter as league-leading Ilwaco downed the Vikings 53-31 on Monday in Menlo.

Willapa Valley (12-7 overall, 11-6 Pacific 2B) got off to a good start, holding a 7-4 lead with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

But Ilwaco (18-2, 17-0) rallied to take a 12-7 lead after a low-scoring, defensive first period.

But Willapa Valley struggled in a second quarter where Ilwaco increased its physicality, holding the Vikings scoreless while forcing 10 turnovers in the frame.

Meanwhile, the Fishermen offense —led by reigning Pacific League MVP Erika Glenn —converted the Viking miscues into points. By halftime, Ilwaco held a commanding 27-7 lead.

“We started out fine,” Willapa Valley head coach John Peterson said. “It was an extremely rough, physical game and they were more physical than us.”

After the break, Willapa Valley kept competing, outscoring Ilwaco 13-11 in the final quarter.

“I thought it would’ve been real easy for our kids to quit,” Peterson said. “But we talked at halftime about playing for each other and I thought we played great in the second half. … My kids battled.”

Glenn scored a game-high 27 points.

Willapa Valley was led by Katie Adkins, who scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Britney Patrick scored seven points while Jeorgi Ritzman, who had three steals in the game, was cited by Peterson for her contributions on the court.

“I thought she played excellent tonight and was really, really solid for us,” Peterson said of Ritzman.

Willapa Valley’s junior varsity team beat Ilwaco’s JV team 47-30 on Monday in Menlo.

Grace Huber had 18 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Vikings JV squad to just its second win against Ilwaco JV in the past four years.

Ocosta 45, South Bend 41

With two games left to go in the regular season —one of those being a matchup against first-place Ilwaco —the Ocosta Wildcats had one legitimate shot at avoiding a winless season.

And the Wildcats came through, defeating the South Bend Indians 45-41 on Monday in Westport.

Emily Snider led Ocosta (1-18, 1-16 Pacific 2B) with 17 points, 12 of those coming in the fourth quarter, and eight rebounds as the Wildcats won the matchup of young teams that were both hit hard by graduation.

Layne Martin and Katelynn Denny added eight points each for Ocosta, which outscored South Bend (6-13. 6-11) 18-10 in the fourth quarter to pick up its first victory of the season.

Alise Rohr led the Indians with 13 points while Zaira Medina and Reece Williams scored eight points apiece for South Bend.

Raymond 55, Northwest Christian 28

After a slow start, Raymond played a better brand of basketball over the final three quarters to earn a 55-28 victory over Northwest Christian on Monday in Lacey.

After leading by just one point at 9-8 after the first quarter, the Seagulls (17-2, 152 Pacific 2B) , led by sophomore guard Kyra Gardner’s 28 points, seized control of the game. Raymond took a 23-15 lead at the half and outscored NWC (5-14, 5-12) 46-20 over the final three quarters.

“That made it possible to accept the 9-8 lead we had after the first quarter,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “As a team, we were much more balanced in the scoring column in the second half, something that needs to happen much more frequently for us to have success as we near postseason play. Tonight’s second half was a much better recipe for success than we have been having.”

Izzy Silvernail added 10 points for the Seagulls, nine of those coming in the second half.

Onalaska 53, Hoquiam 25

Hoquiam scored no more than eight points in any quarter as the Grizzlies lost to Onalaska 53-25 on Monday at Hoquiam High School.

Emiley Elders led Hoquiam (3-13, 0-5) with seven points as the Grizzlies six points in each of the first two quarters, five in the third and eight over the final eight minutes of the game.

Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan took the blame for the Grizzlies’ poor performance.

“I am disappointed I don’t have my players ready to play and that is on me,” he said. “I have to find a way to coach better and help them.”

Taholah 61, North River 11

Three Chitwhins scored in double figures as Taholah defeated North River 61-11 on Monday in Taholah.

Precious Crossguns led the way for Taholah with 14 points while Niamya Curley-Sailto (12 points) and Angel Ancheta (11 pts.) also scored in double digits.

“North River was missing two players that have contributed for them all year and we were able to take advantage of that,” Taholah head coach Fred Pope said. “We rebounded well and we were able to run tonight.”

Lake Quinault 55, Oakville 19

Kariana Cole and Kat Neeland each scored more that 20 points to lead Lake Quinault to a 55-19 victory over Oakville on Monday at Oakville High School.

Neeland had a monster game, scoring 23 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and recording 12 steals in a triple-double performance.

Onalaska 56, Hoquiam 52

Onalaska made the plays in a close game down the stretch to hand Hoquiam a 56-52 loss on Monday in Hoquiam.

In a back-and-forth game, Hoquiam (5-12, 1-4 Evergreen 1A) was down three with eight seconds left.

An Onalaska made free throw made it a four point game, but that was as close as the Grizzlies would get as a Hoquiam 3-pointer was off target and Onalaska corralled the rebound to end the game.

Cameron Bumstead scored 28 points after going 12-for-20 from the field.

Hoquiam head coach Curtis Eccles stated the game came down to extra chances and making shots.

“It came down to them hitting some shots at the end and we missed some,” he said. “We played hard. They had quite a few offensive rebounds, particularly at the end of the game. But other than that, we played hard, shot well and it was nice to see Cameron break out and have a nice shooting night.”

Cayden Kempf added eight points for the Grizzlies.

After losing the non-league contest, Hoquiam faces Tenino in a league game that would send the Grizzlies to the playoffs. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Tenino.
