DISTRICT 1A

Eagles stay alive

CASTLE ROCK — Coming from behind in the fourth set, Elma stayed alive in the District IV 1A Tournament by outlasting Hoquiam, 25-13, 15-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-10, on Wednesday at Castle Rock.

The Eagles lost in three sets to Trico League champion La Center in their opening match, while Hoquiam fell to King’s Way Christian, 25-13, 25-20, 25-19, in its first contest of the night.

Elma (7-9) will face Castle Rock in a loser-out match scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Castle Rock. The Eagles must win twice Saturday to claim the district’s third and final state berth.

Hoquiam concluded its season at 6-11.

This was the third five-setter in as many meetings between Elma and Hoquiam this season. The Eagles, who have won two of those contests, overcame a deficit in the fourth set, then maintained the momentum in the fifth.

“They came out with a lot more fire and energy (in the fifth set),” Hoquiam coach Heather Bozich reported. “The middle two games, we played with the intensity that needs to be played at district. Then we started second-guessing ourselves and hesitating. A lot of communication errors.”

Elma statistics were not reported. Kamimi Papp had 15 kills and Karlie Krohn eight for Hoquiam. Krohn had 26 digs, one more than teammate Ashley Paladin. Paige Folkers had 12 assists and Kacey Pelan 11 for the Grizzlies.

Papp had eight kills, ReyLynn Dunn 12 digs and Elyse Goulet four blocks against King’s Way.

Bozich cited the senior leadership of Folkers and Paladin.

“I’m really proud of how far they’ve come this season,” she said.

AMANDA PARK — Fine serving led Lake Quinault past Columbia Adventist, 25-16, 25-16, 25-22, in the opening round of the District IV Class 1B Tournament on Wednesday at Lake Quinault.

Lake Quinault will face Three Rivers Christian in a semifinal scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at Black Hills High School in Tumwater. Three of the four semifinalists advance to state next week in Yakima.

Liz Guaddrama, Tiana Ramirez and Espy Silva each had perfect serving nights for the Elks. Guaddrama was 11-of-11 from the service line.

Alex Blackburn contributed four kills and three blocks, while Katlyn Neeland was cited for defense.

Lake Quinault coach Sue Kalama gave her entire team high marks.

“We had pretty good defense, our serves were on and the team played as one,” Kalama said. “Everybody who came off the bench contributed a little bit of everything.”

Loggerettes in three

Pirates sink Vikings in five

NAPAVINE — After a sluggish start, Willapa Valley forced a fifth set before falling to Adna 3-2 (25-7, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10) in a District IV 2B tournament match on Wednesday.

The Vikings rebounded from the first set and won the next two behind strong service from Madison Huber and Katelyn McGough.

Abby Hodel had nine digs for the Vikings, while Grace Hodel added eight kills and eight blocks. Brooke Friese had five kills.

“They are a very tall experienced team and I thought we left it all out on the court tonight,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass said. “We recovered really well from the first game. We just came out a little flat and nervous. The rest of the night it was just momentum swings.”

Snodgrass cited Hannah Cook and Sidney Pollard for all around play.

The Vikings finished the season 8-9.

Eagles sweep Indians

NAPAVINE — Life Christian Academy swept South Bend 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) in a District IV 2B tournament match on Wednesday.

The Tribe was led by seven kills and solid setting from Jessica Sanchez as well as five digs from Katelyn Doyle and three blocks from Karley Reidinger.

“We went in with a goal of playing hard and the kids played very hard,” South Bend coach Jackie Sanchez said. “We got caught in some serve-receive rotations, but I give the kids credit. They played hard and kept a great attitude.”

Jackie Sanchez also cited Livvie Ogilvie for setting and service.

The Tribe ends the season 6-11.

Seagulls split matches

ONALASKA — Despite edging Morton-White Pass 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-4), Raymond’s season came to a close as the Gulls fell short against Wahkiakum 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21) in a District IV 2B tournament winner-to-state, loser-out match on Wednesday.

The Seagulls outlasted the Timberwolves in the first match, led by 18 kills, three blocks and four aces from Mikayla Collins. Hailee Smith added 12 kills, five aces and five blocks, while Kendra Dunsmoor had three kills and three blocks and Aubree Gardner finished with seven kills.

Against Wahkiakum, Raymond struggled to adjust to the wrinkles in the Mules attack.

“They were tipping and we just weren’t staying disciplined enough,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “We didn’t adjust very well to it and it got to us. They just had a strategy that was better.”

Collins added eight kills against the Mules, while Smith put down seven kills.

Raymond’s season ends with a 14-4 record.
