Olipop Reviews – Should You Buy Healthy Soda Drink Alternative?

Olipop is a functional soda with significantly less sugar than traditional sodas. Available in flavors like Crisp Apple, Banana Cream, Vintage Cola, and Cherry Cola, Olipop has something for everyone and only contains 2 to 5g of sugar and 9g of fiber per serving.

Does Olipop live up to the hype? How does Olipop work? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about the new functional soda lineup today in our review.

What is Olipop?

Olipop is a new kind of soda packed with prebiotics, plant fiber, and botanicals. Priced at $35.99 for a 12-pack, Olipop is available in 16 flavors and is designed as a healthier alternative to traditional, sugary sodas with limited nutritional value. You can buy Olipop on Amazon, at Walmart, and in other major retailers.

Olipop is led by Ben Goodwin (CEO), who co-founded the company with David Lester in 2018. The company made $852,000 in gross revenue in its first year in business, selling to 40 grocery stores in Northern California. In 2023, the company was earning $20 million per month and is expected to earn $200 million in total by the end of the year.

Popular with Gen Z and millennials, Olipop has grown into a nationwide brand. Customers love the eye-catching packaging and nostalgia-inducing flavors – many of which were originally formulated at Ben Goodwin’s household lab in Santa Cruz, California.

The name “Olipop” comes from the oligosaccharides within the formula. The company shortened the name to “Oli” and added “pop” as a reference to soda/pop.

Olipop Benefits

Some of the benefits of Olipop include:

  • 16+ delicious, nostalgia-inducing flavors
  • 2 to 5g of sugar per can (compared to 25 to 50g in a conventional soda)
  • 9g of fiber for prebiotic effects and digestion
  • No artificial ingredients, preservatives, sweeteners, colors, or additives
  • Vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free
  • Under 50 calories per can

How Does Olipop Work?

c
Olipop works by delivering a “healthy” version of popular soda flavors – like root beer and cream soda. Instead of using 30 to 50g of sugar per can to achieve its unique flavor profile and sweetness, for example, Olipop uses just 2 to 5g of sugar per can while also adding beneficial ingredients like fiber. In fact, with 9g of fiber per serving, Olipop delivers more fiber than an average serving of fruits, vegetables, or even popular fiber supplements like Metamucil.

The average person needs around 25 to 30g of fiber per day, and 95% of adults don’t get their recommended daily fiber intake. By taking Olipop daily, you can support digestion and give your gut the fiber it needs to stay regular.

Fiber also has another benefit: it acts as a prebiotic, helping to support your gut bacteria. Your gut bacteria feed on fiber, and they use fiber to thrive and multiply. If you’re not getting enough fiber in your diet, then you could be killing the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

You can find other beverages with fiber – like orange juice with pulp. Unlike these beverages, however, Olipop contains no pulp. The fiber is dissolved inside the beverage, making it easy to increase your daily fiber intake without the grittiness, chunkiness, or unpleasant texture of other fiber options.

Olipop Ingredients

Olipop builds its unique flavors on top of a blend called OLISMART. OLISMART is a blend of herbs and spices that builds the base Olipop flavor. Those herbs and spices come from roots and root extracts, flower extracts, bark, and more. OLISMART also provides the fiber needed to support gut health – including the 9g of fiber in each can of Olipop.

The fiber in Olipop comes from Jerusalem artichoke, marshmallow root, nopal cactus, chicory root, cassava root, and other natural sources of fiber. Then, the Olipop formulation team – including Ben Goodwin – experiments with other natural flavors to make popular options like Cherry Cola, Cherry Vanilla, Classic Grape, and Cream Soda, among others.

The base of all Olipop flavors is OLISMART, which consists of the following six ingredients:

  • c
    Marshmallow Root:
Olipop uses marshmallow root as a source of plant mucilage. Mucilage is a dense, gel-like material consisting of proteins and polysaccharides. It forms a paste within your digestive tract, and that paste can push waste out of your body. Traditional healers have used marshmallow root for centuries to promote digestive health and soothe gut ailments.
  • Chicory Root: Chicory root is one of the most popular sources of fiber in the supplement industry. It’s rich in inulin, a type of prebiotic fiber known specifically for its effects on the gut microbiome. Chicory is part of the dandelion family.
  • Cassava Root: Cassava root is a starchy tuber that contributes prebiotic fiber to Olipop. The root is naturally rich with resistant dextrin, a type of prebiotic fiber linked to gut health and a thriving gut microbiome. By promoting a thriving microbiome, cassava root can ensure your gut functions in optimal condition.
  • Jerusalem Artichoke: Jerusalem artichoke adds fiber, inulin, potassium, iron, and antioxidants to each can of Olipop. It’s a popular natural source of fiber. Contrary to what many believe, the Jerusalem artichoke is the root of a sunflower-like flower – not a type of artichoke. It’s also packed with inulin, a prebiotic fiber linked to microbiome health.
  • Calendula: Calendula is packed with lutein, beta carotene, and flavonoids – all of which are antioxidants known for their effects on gut health and overall inflammation. Many people take calendula or apply calendula topically to soothe inflammation, and it’s been used for centuries for its healing effects.
  • Nopal Cactus: Nopal cactus contains fiber, antioxidants, and carotenoids linked to gut health and inflammation. Popular in Mexican and Latin American cuisine, Nopal cactus is also commonly found in beauty and medicinal products. In gut health supplements, Nopal cactus is popular because it contains soothing, soluble fibers like pectin and mucilage along with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins.
  • Kudzu Root: Kudzu root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Today, the root of the fast-growing, often-invasive weed is known to be packed with natural ingredients linked to gut health – including a resistant starch with prebiotic benefits.

After adding OLISMART and the seven fiber-packed ingredients within OLISMART, Ben and the Olipop formulation team add juice extracts, sweeteners like stevia, and other natural flavors.

Each 355mL can of Olipop contains 35 to 45 calories, 0g of fat, 35mg or less of sodium, about 15 g of total carbs (including 9g of dietary fiber and 4g of sugar), and 0g of protein. Nutritional information varies slightly from flavor to flavor. Many flavors contain 3% to 9% juice.

The Olipop Story

Olipop was co-founded by Ben Goodwin, 38, and David Lester, 42, in 2018. CNBC recently did a writeup on how the pair turned a $100,000 initial investment into a business generating $20 million per month. Ben had dropped out of college at the University of California Santa Cruz in 2005 (where he studied environmental science) to help one of his friends start a kombucha company. He learned how to brew kombucha, experiment with ingredients, and create functional beverages. After leaving the kombucha company in 2008, Ben started to experiment with his flavors in a makeshift backyard lab. He had grown up drinking soda, and he wanted to create a healthier alternative to today’s popular soda brands.

David Lester, meanwhile, had recently quit his job at Diageo, one of the world’s largest alcohol distributors, moving From Sao Paulo to San Francisco with dreams of starting his own business. David discovered Ben was looking for a business partner, and they met through a mutual acquaintance. In early 2013, the pair met to discuss a potential partnership in Obi, Ben’s new probiotic soda company.

Ben and David sold Obi in 2016 after years of disappointing sales. By 2018, the two had experimented with new flavors and were ready to launch their newest company: Olipop.

Olipop generated $852,000 in its first year of business, selling in grocery stores across northern California. The company continued to grow. After selling in 40 stores in Northern California during the first years in business, the company sold to 23,000+ stores in the United States in 2023 – and is on track to enter 30,000+ stores by the end of 2023.

2022 was a big year for Olipop. The company announced a series B funding round that raised $39.7 million, receiving investments from well-known names like Gwyneth Paltrow, Mindy Kaling, and Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas, among others. By the end of 2022, Olipop had earned $73.4 million in gross revenue. By the end of 2023, the company is expected to earn $200 million.

Other Olipop Features

What features have turned Olipop into a multimillion-dollar beverage brand? Why pick Olipop over other “healthy” sodas and soda alternatives?

Here are some of the features that distinguish Olipop from the competition:

  • 7 Sources of Fiber Per Can: The core of each Olipop formula is a proprietary formula called OLISMART. OLISMART consists of seven sources of fiber, including cassava root, chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, nopal cactus, marshmallow root, and calendula flower.

Other flavors use natural vanilla flavor, sweet birch extract, Himalayan pink salt, stevia, and other natural flavors and sweeteners.
  • Backed by Doctors, Researchers, and Professional Experts: To create its functional sodas, Olipop assembled a team of doctors, researchers, and experts specializing in digestive health and gut health.
