Mark Wayne Sutherby, 57, a Grays Harbor native, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022, in Elma, Washington.

Mark was born on Dec. 17, 1964, in McCleary, Washington, to parents Norman and Delores Sutherby (Leonard). The family lived in Elma for a few years before moving to their farmhouse in Brady, Washington.

His father began a shake mill business that Mark would spend a lot of time offering a helping hand throughout the next 25 years, starting in his high school days. Mark attended Montesano High School and was a very proficient athlete.

He played football, and he and his team won the state championship in 1983. Mark was also involved in wrestling and took 2nd, and 3rd place medals in state meets throughout his sophomore, junior and senior years.

He graduated from Montesano High School in 1984 and went to a trade school in Phoenix, Arizona. He moved down to Phoenix for the next nine months and studied mechanics. After completing his courses, Mark moved back to Elma, Washington, and began working at Herman’s Auto Electric. After a few years, he left Herman’s and started employment with LeMay’s as a diesel mechanic. Mark then found his forever home in Elma, Washington, where he would be able to enjoy his farm.

In 1991, Mark became a father to his son, Jacob. Mark focused on work and raising Jacob for the next few years when he met Ruth Woolsey. They married a year later, on Aug. 25, 1997, in Lewiston, Idaho. They became a blended family, but their love for each other and their children was one in the same. Mark continued working with LeMay’s for 33 years before retiring just a few years ago.

Mark enjoyed offroading. Since high school, he would get in his truck and take off on the logging roads. He loved to ride dirt bikes as well. The family would go on trips for a ride on their bikes. He especially loved being out in the woods, whether it was for a ride or to go mushroom picking, he was happy to be outdoors.

Mark always had an older Toyota truck to restore that he would love to work on. He also enjoyed working on his property and doing home improvement projects. Ten years before his retirement, he became very interested in woodworking and built many pieces for his wife. Mark was always willing to lend a hand to anyone he could, a very genuine and kind soul who cared a lot for those around him. Mark’s biggest joys were his family: his wife, children, and grandkids.

Mark is preceded in death by his father, Norman Sutherby, his sister Sharon, and his son, Jesse, who passed 23 years prior.

Mark is survived by his wife of 25 years, Ruth Sutherby of Elma, Washington; his children: Jacob (Kathryn) Sutherby of Monmouth, Oregon; Johnny ( Jami) House of Chehalis, Washington; Ruthy (Caleb) Butterton of Elma, Washington; and Jenney ( Tyrone) Green, of Boise, Idaho; his brothers Michael and Matthew Sutherby, both of Elma, Washington; sisters: Janice (Perry) Olson of Tacoma, Washington; Debbie Joines of Montesano, Washington; Brenda Cardinal of Copalis Beach, Washington and Sue Sutherby of Eastern Washington.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at 4 p.m. at his daughter’s home in Elma, Washington.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Washington.
