Fred J. Thurman died at his home in Central Park, Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021.

Fred J. Thurman, 75, former Finance Director for the City of Aberdeen, died at his home in Central Park, Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021. He was born in Long Beach, California, May 22, 1946, the son of Denver E. and Helen B. (Smith) Thurman.

Fred graduated from Millikan High School, Long Beach, in 1964 and went to the University of Montana. He was married to Mary Shawl in Libby, Montana, in 1967. He served in the Air Force for four years, returning to the University of Montana to complete his degree in Financial Management in 1972. That same year he came to Aberdeen to work in financial management for St. Joseph’s Hospital for 10 years before becoming the City of Aberdeen Financial Director in 1982, retiring in 2006.

He was active in community service clubs, serving as a president of the Aberdeen Lion’s Club. He also became a member of the Rotary Club of Aberdeen and served as treasurer. After he retired from the city, Fred returned to the Lion’s Club and worked as its treasurer.

Fred had many avocations. He was an avid sailor, had been a chimney sweep, an amateur photographer, a spelunker, a basket weaver and until two weeks ago continued his craft as a wood turner.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary, of the family home in Central Park; two daughters: Nancy (Clint) Bryson, Montesano and Wendy (Matt) Tallis, Darby, Montana; and also three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

There will be no formal memorial services. Private inurnment will take place in Wynooche Cemetery, Montesano.
