Floyd Leroy Shumate

Floyd Leroy Shumate, 94, Satsop resident and former Mill Wright for Weyerhaeuser, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023 at Harbor Regional Health in Aberdeen, Washington.

Floyd was born on May 25, 1929 in Columbus, Montana to Rolland J. and Bernice (Enger) Shumate. He was one of 14 children. His family moved to Elma when he was a teenager and he attended Elma Schools. He joined the US Navy and was a member for the CB’s and trained as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He served in Europe, Korea, Antarctica and Pacific Beach, Washington. After 22 years of service, he was honorably discharged and returned to Aberdeen in 1966.

He met Mildred O’Brien though his sister and her husband, and they were married on Feb. 6, 1960 in Portsmouth, Ohio. She passed on Sept. 17, 2022. They moved to Aberdeen in 1961 and then to North Carolina for 3 years before returning to Aberdeen and then to Satsop in 1972.

He went to work for Weyerhaeuser for 15 years as a Mill Wright in Aberdeen. He was a member of the Central Park Neighborhood Church and enjoyed watching westerns and tinkering on trucks.

Floyd is survived by his 2 sisters: Beryl Davis and Emerald Kelley and his 5 sons: Leroy (Rochelle) Shumate of Satsop, Scott (Tonia) Shumate of Satsop; Rocky (Lisa) Shumate of Morning Sun, Iowa; Mike (Lorianda) Shumate of Chehalis and Keith (Julie) Shumate of Pheasant Hill, Missoui; a daughter, Sherri (Juan) Harvey of Montesano; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of Floyd’s life announced by the family at a later date at Central Park Neighborhood Church. He will be inurned at Satsop Cemetery with military honors.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
