Longtime Grayland resident and former Ocosta High School teacher Floyd Chafin, age 87, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018, surrounded by family at his home in Grayland.

Floyd was born on Feb. 20, 1931, in Wyandotte, Okla., to Charles and Juanita Chafin. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1950. Around this time, he met the love of his life, Edna Vincent at a basketball game and they were married approximately a year later on Dec. 30, 1951. The couple lived in Wyandotte, Okla. for eight years, during which Floyd served for two years in the Marines and then attended college in Miami for two years before graduating with a BA from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla. in 1958 with the help of his wife.

After teaching for a couple years at Wyandotte High School, Floyd and his family moved to Grayland in 1964, where he was the shop teacher at Ocosta High School for over 30 years. Floyd remained an active member of Ocosta High School and the community, holding various positions such as driver’s education teacher, football coach, basketball coach for both men and women, Grayland volunteer firefighter, and cranberry grower.

One of Floyd’s greatest passions was ballroom dancing. Floyd and his family attended many dances at the Grange, VFW, Eagles, or Elks. He shared his enthusiasm with everyone that he came in contact him with, especially his grandchildren. Floyd and his wife also taught many dance classes.

Floyd is preceded by his loving wife Edna, and son Charles. He is survived by his sister Vivian, five children, 13 grandchildren, and more than eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam, followed by a light luncheon at the Aberdeen Elks at 11:30.
