Edward F. Lane Sr., age 82, of Ocean Shores, Washington, passed away on May 23, 2021, at Garden Courte in Olympia, Washington, with his loving wife Jan by his side.

Ed was born May 17, 1939, in Mobile, Alabama, to James and Catherine Lane. Ed graduated from Brighton High School in Boston in 1957. The family moved a lot as Ed’s father was a physician with the Public Health Service, and they settled in the Northwest around 1958.

Ed attended the University of Washington and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Ed started a family and his first child Ed Jr. was born in 1964 followed by Gregg in 1967. A few years later Brandi arrived in 1974 and then Charnie in 1978.

When Ed was in his 20s he drag raced a ’59 Austin Healy Sprite and often told the story of how he borrowed a helmet from “Big Daddy” Don Garlits when he forgot his at a race at old Seattle International Raceway, which we kids thought was pretty cool.

Ed was a volunteer firefighter with the Bellevue Fire Department from 1967-71 and also with the Sparks, Nevada Fire Department in 1973. Ed spent as much time as he could with his children and enjoyed watching and coaching them in soccer through the years, and as he liked to say “I’ve been to more soccer games than I can remember.”

Ed spent most of his adult life in the Bellevue, Redmond and Seattle area and married the love of his life, Jan, in 1985 in Reno, Nevada. Together they operated Lane Photography for about 10 years and won awards for their work. Ed worked for the City of Seattle for 25 years, retiring in 2002 and together they lived in Bellevue until her retirement in 2004, at which time they moved to their dream home in Ocean Shores right on one of the canals.

He was active with the Ocean Shores crime watch and the Ocean Shores Animal Shelter for many years and was a big supporter of the police and fire departments. Throughout their retired years, Ed and Jan rode trains all over the U.S. and also took 19 cruises with the highlight being crossing the Panama Canal twice. He really enjoyed taking his boat out with Jan and fishing the waters around Ocean Shores. Ed also enjoyed caring for his yard and always had a very bountiful garden even in the cool temps of Ocean Shores which we thought was impressive. Ed also enjoyed feeding and caring for the numerous deer that would frequent the property, and we are pretty sure he had names for all of them. Ed was an awesome handyman and always had some project going when any of us would visit. Ed was also an excellent cook and was most proud of the large breakfasts he prepared whenever someone visited, and it was only a few years ago that he gave up his recipe for his famous scrambled eggs. Even in the last few years as his disease progressed he stayed active with projects and working in the yard.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Kitty, and brother Jim Lane. He is survived by wife Jan of Ocean Shores, children: Ed Lane Jr. and wife Cindy of Yakima, Washington, Gregg Lane and wife Jane of Beaverton, Oregon, Brandi Lane of Seattle, Charnie Miller and husband Kevin of Poulsbo, Washington, and brother Don Lane and wife Paula of Austintown, Ohio; and grandchildren: Nicholas, Breanna, Rachel, Ryan and Ravenna.

The Neptune Society has been entrusted with cremation, and Ed will be interred at Sunset Hills in Bellevue at a later date with a private family service at that time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ed’s favorite charity, the American Red Cross.
