Donald John Helser, age 87, a resident of Quinault, died on Friday, Oct. 27, 2020, at his home in Quinault. Mr. Helser was born on March 1, 1933, in Shelton, Washington, to Marian John and Bealah Rerene (Jackson) Helser. He was raised in Simpson Logging Camps in Mason County.

He began working at the age of 14, taking pack horses into the Olympics.

On Dec. 16, 1955, he and Jackie Marrs were married. While in the U.S. Navy, Don was stationed all around the world, including Guam, Japan, Alaska, the eastern and western Caribbean, South America and Hawaii. He served two tours of Vietnam and retired with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.

Upon his military retirement, Don began working for Grays County as the Road Superintendent and retired from there after 15 years. Not one to remain idle, Don worked an additional 10 years in the woods with his son Erven. He loved working with wood. He would spend hours re-arranging and stocking the woodshed. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking numerous cruises with family members.

Surviving relatives include his son Erven Helser (Dianna) of Quinault; a daughter Virginia Parker (Steve) of Shelton; one brother, Chuck Helser of Elma and one sister, Charlotte Burns of Beaverton, Oregon. There are many the Helser’s considered as their grandchildren.
