Donald Eugene Dougherty “BULLDOG”, 80 years old and of Hoquiam, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2020, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. Don was born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, on August 23, 1940, to John Wesley and Esther Constance (Nordby) Dougherty.

In 1946 the family moved to the Harbor, where he attended Hoquiam schools. Don enrolled in the Navy, stationed in the Philippines. He returned to Hoquiam after his discharge.

On Jan. 11, 1969, he and Judy Cheatle were married in Montesano. The couple lived in Hoquiam, where they raised their family.

“Bulldog” drove log truck for various companies, including Francis Smith, Anderson & Middleton and Steve Anderson Logging, where he retired. He had owned and operated a shake mill (Dougherty Cedar) from 1971-1974.

He loved working with wood, hauling it, cutting it for firewood, and making family treasures in his woodworking shop. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and clam digging. Sports were a huge part of his life. He coached his son and loved to watch his children, grandchildren, and great-nieces participate. He later became the Zags’ No.1 fan. Memorable moments for the family were from the numerous road trips to the Midwest to visit family.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Dirk Dougherty, of Hoquiam.

Don is survived by his wife, Judy Dougherty; three daughters, Shelly (Pete) Feneide of Ocosta, Lisa (Terry) Melton of Hoquiam, and Dawn Dougherty of Hoquiam; a sister Virginia Hessler of Olympia; eight grandchildren, Sara Marsh, Marcus Messer, Cortney Melton, Riann Melton, Brandon Feneide, Randi Salinas, Dalton Dougherty, and Taylor Dougherty; and 10 great grandchildren.
