Brenda Marlene Mitby, passed away at home in Tokeland, Washington, on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021.

Loving mother, grandmother and teacher, Brenda Marlene Mitby, passed away at home in Tokeland, Washington, on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born to Chris and Viola (Ooja) Nelson on Feb. 19, 1939, in Portland, Oregon.

Brenda grew up in Tokeland and loved the ocean. She graduated from Ocosta High School in 1956, and from the University of Washington in 1960 with her bachelor’s degree in teaching. Brenda was very involved in extracurricular activities and athletics in both high school and college. During her time at the University of Washington, Brenda was one of the first women to letter in basketball.

On Aug. 28, 1965, Brenda married James Ernest Mitby at Unity Church in Seattle, Washington.

Brenda was a high school and college teacher for 30 years. She taught at Weatherwax High School, Hoquiam High School, North Bend High School and Grays Harbor College. In addition to teaching, she also enjoyed being a high school advisor and coach. She retired in 1999.

She enjoyed gardening, watching sporting events, spending time with her kids and grandchildren. Brenda loved taking her boat on the Willapa Bay and up North River. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan and fulfilled her dream of living to see the Braves win another World Series this year.

Brenda is survived by her sons Ed (Mina) Mitby of Plandome, New York; Andy (Cyndy) of Grayland and Eric Mitby of Tokeland; brother Ray (Ginny) Nelson of Centralia, Washington; sisters Annie Herrmann of Wenatchee, Washington and Kristi Nelson of Tokeland, Washington; and five grandchildren: Drake, Teal, Mina, Magnus and Mats.
