Last week on Tuesday, at 2 a.m., Aberdeen Police Department officers observed a 1997 GMC truck fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Fourth and L streets.
The officers were initially unable to catch the vehicle due to its evasive driving but later located it again on B Street. The truck accelerated, and the officers pursued it for a short time through North Aberdeen until the driver turned onto the 1200 block of Randall Street, which dead-ends.
The driver exited the vehicle, and officers pursued him on foot until he jumped into the Wishkah River and attempted to swim to the other side. The driver became tired and cold, at which point he returned to the river’s edge and was taken into custody. The male driver, a 26-year-old man from Neilton, was identified and found to have an outstanding warrant from the Washington state Department of Corrections for third-degree assault.
The Aberdeen Fire Department was summoned to check for injuries and exposure before the driver was booked into the Aberdeen jail on charges of attempting to elude police, resisting arrest and obstructing law enforcement.
