Teenager arrested for shooting case earlier in month

A single shot was fired at a fleeing vehicle

Aberdeen police made an arrest in the case of a shooting incident on Simpson Avenue nearly two weeks ago.

On a Thursday morning, a 15-year-old boy was arrested and transported to the city jail for aiming/discharging a firearm within city limits and for second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, according to an Aberdeen Police Department news release.

The initial incident occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 15, when a call came in reporting a gunshot and kids fleeing the scene. Police investigating recovered a .45-caliber shell casing from the scene and began canvassing the area. No injuries or damage resulting from a gunshot was reported or discovered.

Further investigation was able to identify suspects through local surveillance footage, according to the news release. It came out that the group of teenagers had had an altercation with an unknown person in a vehicle and squeezed off a round at the car as it fled the scene.

While serving a warrant on the residence of the juvenile shooter, a .45-caliber handgun with a loaded magazine was found in a drawer next to the suspect’s bed. The ammunition in the handgun matched the spent brass located at the scene, according to the news release.

The case is ongoing as detectives seek to identify the other kids involved as well as the occupants of the vehicle.
