Police investigating explosion on railroad near Brady

It’s apparently not the first such incident

The Grays Harbor Sheriffs Office is investigating an explosion reported on the Puget Sound and Pacific railroad near Brady on Feb. 10.

The initial report of an explosion near the Fire District 2 Station 2-2 near Brady came in from railroad personnel, said Undersheriff Kevin Schrader.

“On the 10th, a little after 9 p.m., we were contacted by the conductor of a train traveling eastbound through Montesano,” Schrader said. “The conductor observed what he called an explosion, a flash with a loud bang. It didn’t cause any damage to the train itself.”

A similar incident occurred several months ago.

“This is not the first incident of this nature that’s been reported to us,” Schrader said. “We responded and canvassed the area looking for video surveillance of the incident.”

Sheriff’s office personnel investigating the area found some tentative evidence, Schrader said.

“We found possible partial remnants of an explosive device,” Schrader said. “We’re talking with the Washington state bomb squad to see if the device is something that could have caused the explosion.”

Not knowing the scale of the issue is a problem, Schrader said.

“We don’t know at this point if it’s someone messing around and having fun with fireworks or the start to a bigger issue,” Schrader said. “If anyone observed anything out there, please give us a call.”
