New weekly COVID case counts drop slightly

New COVID-19 cases reported in Grays Harbor County over a week’s time came in lower than the previous week, but still remain high, with more than 40% of the new confirmed cases reported in Ocean Shores.

Numbers released Friday morning by Grays Harbor County Public Health show 64 new cases the week of July 22-28, which is five less than the previous week’s report.

Ocean Shores, which has experienced a surge in cases in recent weeks, had 27 new confirmed cases in the last week. Across the Grays Harbor entrance in Westport, for the fourth week in a row, no new cases were reported. Hoquiam had four new cases for the week, Aberdeen five, according to an updated cases by ZIP code map from Grays Harbor County Public Health.

The statewide rate of new cases per 100,000 over a two week period is just over 130, in Grays Harbor County it’s 160.6, higher than any other adjacent counties including Lewis and Thurston. Total cases for the pandemic in Grays Harbor County stands at 4,791.

The county has broken the 80-deaths mark, with two new deaths reported during the week, 81 total for the pandemic. There was one new hospitalization reported, raising the pandemic total to 254 in the county.

As for vaccinations, more than 57% of the county population age 16 and older have received a first dose, still lagging behind the state number of more than 70%. As schools get ready to start full-time, on-campus learning in about a month, about 56% of the total population age 12 and up has initiated vaccination, and just over 50% is considered fully vaccinated. Currently, vaccines are approved only for those age 12 and up.

The state average molecular testing rate per 100,000 population over a week is 159.7, with just under 6% coming back positive. The testing average in Grays Harbor County is 154.5, with 8% coming back positive.
