Gusts nearing 70 mph whip region Friday

Downed trees and power outages reported around the Twin Harbors

Wind gusts nearing 70 mph with sustained winds topping 40 mph brought down trees and knocked out power to thousands of customers on the Twin Harbors Friday.

The National Weather Service in Seattle posted a high gust at Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam of 66 mph at 2:20 p.m. Sustained winds there were as high as 41 mph. Downed trees knocked out power and partially blocked roads along State Route 105 west of Hoquiam, Valley Road in Hoquiam and on Johns River Road south of Markham.

Gusts of 53 and 60 mph were recorded at Ocean Shores and Westport, respectively, just after noon Friday. South of Westport the weather service recorded a 55 mph gust just after 10 a.m.

As of 3 p.m. Grays Harbor County PUD reported multiple outages across the region. Moclips, Copalis, Taholah, Axford Prairie, Quinault, Amanda Park, Neilton and Kalaloch residents, more than 3,700 total, lost power and crews were still searching for the cause. There were also 435 customers without power in Bay City, Johns River, Markham and Ocosta. Chehalis Street in Westport was dark, as were Tokeland and North River. Trees knocked out power for 20 customers on Johns River Road, and about 50 customers in Humptulips were without power. Earlier in the day, Oakville and Copalis Crossing had outages affecting a total of about 900 customers.

In Pacific County, the PUD had power restored to most customers in the southern part of the county shortly after noon. There were still outages in Surfside and parts of Ilwaco late Friday afternoon.

Charles Wallace with Grays Harbor County Emergency Management reported only scattered limbs down across much of the county and no reports of serious damage as of late Friday afternoon. Scott McDougall from Pacific County Emergency Management also reported limbs and some trees down in Pacific County, but again, no real damage from the windstorm.
