Cold front could bring snow to Harbor

A cold weather pattern will move into the area on Sunday setting up the chance of lowland snow into next week.

The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday, warning that large breaking waves of up to 24 feet were expected along the north and central coast.

A high surf warning was also issued for the southern Washington coast, with waves up to 26 feet expected.

“Cold air will be shifting south through British Columbia over the weekend. A weather system on Sunday will arrive as cold Fraser (River) outflow develops,” according to the National Weather Service.

“The leading edge of this cold air is called a modified arctic front. It is not unusual for snow to fall with this type of cold front. … Snow amounts tend to be light with modified arctic fronts but falling temperatures can lead to icy roads after even light snowfall,” the Weather Service said.

The front was expected to drop down to the Harbor on Sunday night, according to the Weather Service. The first chance of snow comes early Monday with the low predicted to be 32 degrees. Tuesday will be even colder, with lows dropping to 26 degrees Monday night into Tuesday.

City of Aberdeen officials had warned of the possibility of minor flooding on Friday, with a 12-foot “king” tide at mid-day, accompanied by heavy rain. The rain came in buckets off and on throughout the day Friday and the banks of the Chehalis and Wishkah rivers strained to contain it, but tidal flooding was only minor and confined to the usual low spots around downtown and neighborhoods near the rivers.

More king tides are predicted through the weekend.
