Candidate filing week starts today

Candidate filing week began today at 8 a.m., and declarations of candidacy and full payment must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday.

The 18-day primary voting period begins July 18 and runs through Primary Day, Aug. 5. The General Election’s voting period starts Oct. 17 and lasts until election day on Nov. 4.

Carrie Hubbard, who was appointed to Aberdeen City Council Ward 4 Position 7 replacing Stan Sidor who resigned in February is expected to declare her candidacy for the seat.

“Candidate filing is the first step in running for office, and we continue to work toward making this process as accessible and easy as possible with our online filing option,” Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said via press release. “Serving as an elected official is an important way to get involved with your community, whether at the local, state, or federal level.”

During the filing period, prospective candidates can declare their intention to run for one of more than over 3,200 seats ranging from county positions to school boards. Complete information about open offices and filing fees is available on the Office of the Secretary of State’s Elections website.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to file online. Applicants may also print a Declaration of Candidacy form and mail it along with a check payable to the Office of the Secretary of State, P.O. Box 40229, Olympia, WA 98504-0229. State candidates also have the option of filing in person at the Legislative Building, located at 416 Sid Snyder Ave. SW in Olympia.
