Aberdeen shooting suspect taken into custody

An Aberdeen man was arrested Thursday, Dec. 9, one day after he allegedly shot an 18-year-old woman at an apartment building that prompted the lockdown of Aberdeen High School.

Aberdeen Police found and arrested Gregory A. Davis, 56, from Aberdeen, during a traffic stop at about 11:36 p.m. Thursday in Aberdeen, according to an Aberdeen Police Department news release Friday, Dec. 10. Davis was a passenger in the vehicle. The handgun used in the assault has not been found.

Davis was booked into the Aberdeen Jail on probable cause of first-degree assault with a firearm.

The woman, who was shot once in the upper left leg on Wednesday, Dec. 8, was sent to Harbor Regional Health Community Hospital. Aberdeen Police Commander Dale Green said the gunshot wound is not life threatening.

The shooting happened at about 12:05 p.m. Wednesday inside the apartment building at 213 N. F Street.

Green said Davis has a little bit of criminal history in Aberdeen, but none of the history — prior to Wednesday’s shooting — is violent.

“Looks like primarily traffic offenses,” Green said. “Driving while suspended.”

Once a neighbor called Aberdeen Police at about 12:05 p.m. Wednesday to report the shooting, the police contacted the Aberdeen School District’s office and put Aberdeen High School on lockdown.

Aaron Roiko, principal at Aberdeen High School, said the school was on a modified lockdown — where no one is allowed inside or out of the building — for about 30 minutes.

“Fortunately, for our schedule, we had an early release,” Roiko said Wednesday. “The kids stayed in the building until we got an all-clear.”

Roiko — who’s in his first year as principal — said he’s thankful for the clear communication between Aberdeen Police and the high school staff.

“We have a lot of good staff in the building,” he said.
