Aberdeen man killed in State Route 8 crash

An Aberdeen man was killed early Sunday morning, Feb. 20, after the vehicle he was riding in crashed and struck a bridge on State Route 8 at the State Route 12 interchange near Elma.

Pablo Lopez Chavez, 39, was a passenger in a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan when the one-vehicle accident occurred about 1:42 a.m. Sunday, the Washington State Patrol said in a report. Lopez Chavez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was declared dead at the scene.

“Vehicle one was traveling westbound on State Route 8 at the State Route 12 interchange in lane one or two,” the report stated. “Vehicle one veered to the left side and struck the bridge. Vehicle one came to rest in lane one.”

The driver, a 15-year-old boy, was transferred to a local hospital as a precaution, but did not appear to be injured. The driver also notified authorities of the accident, the report stated.

At the time of the crash, the vehicle was filled with seven people ranging in age from 2 years old to 39 years old. Nobody else was injured in the crash — everyone, including the driver, was wearing a seat belt at the time the crash happened with the exception of Lopez Chavez.

The crash is under investigation. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, the report stated.
