• Congresswoman Julia Butler Hanson informed the Daily World today that the House appropriations committee has approved construction of 10 new Naval housing units at the Pacific Beach Naval facility at a cost of $200,000.

A spokesman for the Navy testified that the present base housing consists of 30 units and personnel assigned to Pacific Beach must wait from four to 12 months for quarters. He said private housing in the area is either substandard or costs more than military families can afford.

• Elma speedster Jim Cox, who goes by “Butch” yesterday went by, around and through Montesano’s defense with amazing agility.

The flying feet of Charles Ladd and a yeoman effort up front helped Aberdeen make history Saturday night.

Ladd rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns and the Bobcats scored the first state football playoff victory in school history by downing Kennedy, 35-14 at Highline Stadium in the opening round of AA play.

The Bobcats, 10-1, will face unbeaten Lake Stevens in a quarterfinal matchup next weekend at Edmonds Stadium.

The effectiveness of the AHS ground game can be largely attributed to the offensive line of Tom Haight, Jake Shapansky, Brian Sullivan, Jonathan Gozart and Mason Skinner, who opened gaping holes from the opening whistle.

“It was a great effort up front,” said winning coach Rob Lonborg. “That was the difference in the game, that our guys were able to control the line of scrimmage.”
