Music and arts center to close Oct. 25, seeking new location

The Garage Music and Arts Center at the Shoppes at Riverside will be closing Oct. 25 as they seek another location, according to the venue’s founders, Kelly Durham and JR Lakey.

“With current restrictions due to COVID-19, we have had to cease operations of our workshops, concerts, jam sessions, lessons, and use of our practice rooms and community instruments,” read a post on the nonprofit community venue and practice space.

”Operating exclusively as a retail store is not financially sustainable, nor is it in keeping with our mission as a nonprofit,” continued the post. “We hope to reopen in a new location once it is safe for us to return to public spaces to create together.”

The nonprofit organization will continue operations through the transition.

”Words cannot express our gratitude for the kindness and support we have received since first opening our doors in 2017. Through the Garage, we have built many wonderful friendships and connections within the community. This decision truly hurts our hearts,” read the post. “The song isn’t over. We’re just pressing pause.”

The Garage also serves as a satellite rental location for Ted Brown Music in Tacoma, and Lakey said he expects that to continue.
