• Aberdeen elementary school students interested in getting into the school’s band program should see the district’s elementary band director by the end of the week, according to Music Coordinator Hampton Wines.

Wines said it was not necessary to own an instrument to join the program. Both Music Center, Inc and Aub Schmidt Music Co. of Aberdeen offer rental-purchase plans on instruments, and that the school district has mellophones, baritone horns and bass horns which it will rent for $10 a year.

The school district’s band program provides free instruction in all concert band instruments — except piano, guitar and accordion.

Proponents of a proposal to build a Pacific County community pool will meet Monday evening in the Raymond community center. The pool has been discussed for about eight or nine years, says Raymond Mayor Leon Lead.

In 1988 voters approved a recreational district to supervise pool construction and management but didn’t approve a pool maintenance and operations levy, Lead said. Because the voters didn’t approve the maintenance levy, the grant sources wouldn’t give the district the money to build the pool.

Raymond used to have a city pool but it closed 10 years ago. Project supporters are looking at building a covered pool in the Raymond area or possibly repairing the old outdoor pool.

Satsop Wells Environmental Education Lodge, operated under the auspices of the Grays Harbor Conservation District, lies at the end of a long gravel road 36 miles north of Montesano

Far removed from the trappings of the modern world, the SWELL grounds offer idyllic surroundings to foster the concepts of self-awareness, cooperation and forest conservation.

A dozen military-type obstacles, collectively known as the ropes course, punctuate the camp and serve as catalysts for self-discovery and honing teamwork skills, say SWELL officials.

Recently the Elma football squad pushed the envelope of their physical and psychological limitations by conquering the various obstacles together. The purpose was not in performing the obstacle the fastest — the objective lay in the struggle itself, without the impetus of peer pressure.

“Hey, hey,” one of the rope course guides scolded an Elma player who made the unpardonable mistake of joking about someone’s alleged sexuality. “We don’t have put-downs here. Put-downs weaken your group and you’re out here to learn to work better a a team.”
