Commercial fishermen rested at Kelso today after a record breaking week which saw them take approximately one million pounds of smelt from the Cowlitz river. The halt in fishing activities was occasioned by the regular weekend closed period which will continue until 8 p.m. Saturday.

Fishermen, two to a boat, have been finding it easy to dip two tons of fish in a four-hour period.

The demand for smelt has been trebled this year because of meat shortages and food rationing. The armed services also are taking huge amounts of fish with preliminary orders calling for 10,000 boxes of smoked smelt and 20,000 or more of frozen smelt. Each box contains 50 pounds of fish and nets the dipper $1.25.

The smell of marijuana will be wafted around Aberdeen school assembly halls beginning in March, as part of an educational program run by the Aberdeen police department, David Auer, police chief said this morning.

The department this weekend received 15 kits, each containing a plastic leaf shaped like that on the marijuana plant and five wafers containing a trace of marijuana, but not enough to make anybody “high,” Auer emphasized.

Officers will use the wafers in talks before school assemblies. Officers will break the wafers into unequal pieces, igniting it, placing it on top of smaller pieces in a receptacle that will be passed around, so students can sniff the smoldering mass.

When it came down to crunch time, the Grays Harbor College Chokers’ game plan was simple — spread the court and try to force a foul.

It worked to precision and then some, producing a nail biting 84-81 victory over Tacoma Community College Thursday night at Sam Benn Gym.

The win, coupled with Lower Columbia College’s 111-73 pasting of Pierce Thursday, catapulted the Chokers (16-13) into the NWAACC Tournament of Skagit Valley next week.

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight,” said Choker coach Gary Arthur. He cited the floor leadership of Jim Mattler as well as the clutch free throw shooting of Shawn Forbin (6 of 7) and Jeff Artis (10 of 12).
