BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Montesano 48, Cedar Park Christian 34

Montesano overcame a horrendous first quarter en route to a 48-34 non-league victory over Cedar Park Christian on Monday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (14-5 overall, 6-1 1A Evergreen) couldn’t hit the broadside of the proverbial barn in the first eight minutes of the game, managing a lone field goal from junior post Caden Grubb and a pair of free throws to trail the Eagles (7-10) 20-4 at the end of the first quarter.

But Monte flipped the switch in the second quarter as the Dogs defense pitched a shutout to cut the deficit to 20-19 by halftime.

The Monte defense continued its dominance in the third quarter, holding CPC to two points to take a comfortable 37-22 lead into the final period of play.

It turned out to be more than enough as Monte would end the evening with a 48-34 victory.

“Our first quarter was about as bad as it could get, but our defense is what catapulted us back,” Monte head coach Shaydon Farmer said. “We closed out very well, we boxed out very well, we communicated much better than the first quarter. It was just a much different team once the first quarter ended. Proud of the guys for sticking with it and going on that big run though.”

Monte was led by Caden Grubb with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting (69%) and 13 rebounds to complete the double-double performance. Grubb also had a team-best three steals to go along with two assists in the win.

The Bulldogs hit 18-of-49 shots (37%) from the field, including 14 of 28 from inside the arc (50%), and made 7-of-10 free throws (70%).

Monte had 43 rebounds as a team, led by Caden Grubb and senior forward Mason Fry, who tied with Grubb for the team lead with 13.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over 18 times in the game.

Monte now turnes its attention to a league-finale matchup against Elma at 6:45 p.m. on Friday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs currently sit a half-game ahead of the Eagles in the win column.

Ilwaco 58, Raymond-South Bend 46

Raymond-South Bend couldn’t overcome a big halftime deficit in a 58-46 loss to Ilwaco on Monday at Raymond High School.

The Ravens (10-12, 4-4 2B Pacific) fell behind by 19 points by halftime as the Fishermen (14-2, 8-0) jumped out to a big 40-21 lead thanks to their press defense.

“Ilwaco started out shooting pretty hot and put a press on us in the second that forced a lot of turnovers,” Ravens head coach Jon Schray said.

Raymond-South Bend got as close as nine points in the fourth quarter, but pulled no closer to suffer the loss.

“I was happy with how we fought back in the second half,” Schray said.

Senior post Aaron Somero and senior guard Chris Banker scored 13 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Ravens.

RSB finished the regular season as the 2B Pacific League’s No. 3 playoff seed and will compete in the 2B District 4 Tournament beginning Saturday (time, location, opponent to be determined).
