PREP SOFTBALL

Montesano 4, Aberdeen 0

One big inning turned out to be the difference in what has become one of the premiere matchups in the hotbed of Twin Harbors prep softball.

The softball gods shined on Montesano for four runs in the fifth inning to beat Aberdeen 4-0 in a battle of two defending state-championship teams on Tuesday at the Bishop Athletic Complex in Aberdeen.

Through the first four innings of the game, there was a question as to if either team would score at all as standout sophomore starting pitchers in Aberdeen’s Maysinn Jones and Monte’s Violet Prince made two high-powered offenses look mediocre in the early going.

Both pitchers had to work out of jams in the first inning.

Jones faces a bases-loaded, no-out situation before getting a strikeout, a force out at home and a ground out to end the Monte scoring threat.

In the bottom of the first, Aberdeen leadoff hitter Britten Neal walked and advanced to third with no outs, but Prince struck out the next three Bobcats to keep the game scoreless.

The Bulldogs (14-0 overall) eventually broke through in the top of the fifth against the Bobcats (9-3) as the softball bounced their way.

Monte leadoff hitter Lex Stanfield turned what would have been a leadoff single into a triple as the ball took a sharp left turn on a bad hop to get past left fielder Audree Gaddis.

“I just wanted to get the ball on the ground because I feel like if I get on, it really helps our team to stay hyped,” Stanfield said. “I think our team just figured out we could do it and we just had to relax and keep going.”

“That ball was spinning a little differently on dirt than it does on turf,” Pace said. “With Lex though, if you make a mistake on her, her speed just eats you up.”

Bulldogs shortstop Jaelyn Butterfield followed with a line-drive double to left to plate Stanfield with the game’s first run.

With one out and Butterfield on third, center fielder Taylor Galvin was safe at first on a swinging bunt back to Jones as the Aberdeen defense failed to rotate to cover first base.

Monte’s baserunning prowess caused more havoc on the Bobcats defense one batter later as second baseman Lainey Robinson was safe on a comebacker to Jones, who looked toward Butterfield at third before eating the ball as the speedy Robinson raced down the line.

First baseman Regan Wintrip followed with a seeing-eye infield single deep into the hole at shortstop, scoring Butterfield for a 2-0 lead.

Galvin just beat a throw home to score on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.

Charlee Fairbairn drove in Robinson with a fielder’s choice ground out for Monte’s fourth run.

That turned out to be more than enough for Prince, who allowed just one base hit – a single by shortstop Ally Adams with two outs in the seventh – the rest of the way to preserve Montesano’s win.

“(Monte head coach Pat Pace) basically told us just to kind of calm down because we were just kind of like going with the motion and weren’t really determined,” Stanfield said of her coach’s talk ahead of the run-scoring outburst. “Coach Pace saying that kind of washed our thoughts away and it was like we were locked in now and got going.”

“Every time we meet, it’s just making adjustments in the box,” Pace said of his instruction. “We were too far back in the first couple of innings and needed to move up on her. She changes speed so we had to move up to try to take all the breaking pitches and change-up away from her.”

“Some of those balls, we’ve got to work through,” said Aberdeen head coach Jimmy McDaniel, who lamented his team’s defense not being sharp enough against a quality opponent the likes of Montesano. “There were plays we should’ve worked through and got the out. We’ve got to do a lot of adjustments moving forward. … I think they understand where they faulted.”

Prince gave up just two hits, two walks and one hit batter the entire game while striking out 15 to earn the victory.

The right-hander threw 111 pitches in the game, 69 for strikes (62%).

“(Violet) was doing great,” Stanfield said. “There were a couple of time where she just got in a groove and was going with it.”

“She made her adjustments a little bit more inside than what we’ve thrown in the past and she started mixing in a little bit of a rise ball, which we haven’t thrown that much this year,” Pace said of Prince’s ability to quiet an Aberdeen offense that produced 10 or more runs six times this season. “It was working. They were swinging through it and she mixed in some off-speed pitches today too. We knew we were facing a good team, that’s why we play these teams after league is done for us.”

Jones allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

Both state-championship coaches were impressed by the performances in the circle of the two starting sophomores.

“(Prince) threw really well,” McDaniel said. “We just need to make the adjustments in the box and we made the adjustments too late. … She throws really well and she can spin the ball. I don’t think I saw a change-up until the fifth or sixth inning. I didn’t even know she had one. … We want to face great pitchers and I think a game like this helps moving into districts.”

“I told (Jones), ‘I really look forward to seeing her the next two years,’ because I think it’s going to be great battles between her and Violet,” Pace said. “It says a lot for our area to have two programs like this and a third when you throw Elma in there.”

Galvin had two hits and made a highlight-reel diving catch racing in to short center field for the second out in the fourth.

Freshman pitcher Emelia Kohn pitched a scoreless seventh in relief of Jones.

Aberdeen resumes league play with a key matchup against Tumwater at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Montesano, the only undefeated team left in the state, faces 8th-ranked Seattle Christian at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
