PREP SOFTBALL

Aberdeen 8, W.F. West 5

Aberdeen got a big win over one of the teams figuring to compete for a 2A Evergreen Conference title with an 8-5 win over W.F. West on Monday at the Bishop Athletic Complex in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (4-0 overall, 3-0 2A Evergreen) trailed the Bearcats (6-2, 2-1) 2-0 after three innings as the high-scoring Aberdeen offense struggled to figure out the puzzle that was standout W.F. West pitcher Taylor Tobin.

That changed in the bottom of the fourth as a Cats rally was sparked by a leadoff double from senior catcher Alyssa Yakovich.

Two batters later, Yakovich and courtesy runner Victoria Bull came in to score on a double from shortstop Ally Adams to tie the game. First baseman Emilia Kohn then singled to plate Adams with the go-ahead run.

With two outs in the inning, Bobcats third baseman Britten Neal stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and smacked a 0-1 Tobin pitch to the gap in left-center field, clearing the bases and staking Aberdeen to a 6-2 lead.

“I was a little nervous because I had struck out the time before, but I went up there with confidence and was thinking, ‘Just go up there and swing the bat as hard as you can and, hopefully, something will happen,’” Neal said. “I wasn’t looking for a specific pitch. I was looking for a strike that I liked and I found the one.”

W.F. West responded with two in the top of the fifth on RBI singles from Allison Smitherman and Karlee Coleman, but the Bobcats got the runs right back in the bottom half of the frame when second baseman Cheyanna Kohn hammered a pitch well over the center-field fence for a two-run home run and an 8-4 lead.

Aberdeen starting pitcher Maysinn Jones would surrender a run on a two-out double from Brooklyn Spencer in the seventh, but would then get Kenley Fragner on a fly out to Rylee Hendrickson in center to end the game.

“Maysinn did a really good job pitching and Cheyanna’s defense was so good, she almost had a triple play, and Ally definitely killed it with three putouts,” Neal said. “(The win) feels really good because we know our league is hard and it’s good to win against them in our home opener.”

All eight Aberdeen runs were earned and the Bobcats had 12 hits in the game off Tobin, who pitched a perfect game in her previous outing, an 8-0 win over Shelton on Friday.

“In the first inning, we struggled a little bit. We’ve done that the past few games where it just takes a few to time (the pitcher) up,” Neal said. “I think the first hit that really set us off was Alyssa’s double, from there we just continued and didn’t stop.”

“We know Taylor is going to spin the ball very well, she just threw a perfect game right before this,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy McDaniel said. “We’ve seen all the pitchers in this league for two-plus years now, so we have an idea of what to expect and to plan accordingly. … For the last four games now, once we get going, we go. We seem to rally very well behind each other and compound runs.”

Eight different Bobcats had a base hit in the game, led by Neal, Adams, left fielder Audree Gaddis and right fielder Madi Baker with two hits apiece.

With the win, Aberdeen sits in first place alone on top of the 2A Evergreen Conference, a game ahead of the Bearcats and Centralia.

Aberdeen takes on Shelton at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Shelton.

Leading 5-1 over the Beavers (1-5, 0-4) in the sixth, the Grizzlies picked up two insurance runs on RBI singles from catcher Mya Standstipher and shortstop Lexi LaBounty to take a 7-1 lead.

That was plenty of run support for Burgess, who retired six of the final seven batters she faced over the final two innings to secure the victory, snapping Hoquiam’s four-game losing streak in the process.

“Really good to get this win,” Hoquiam head coach Brandon Templer said.

Standstipher led the Hoquiam offense with a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate. The left-handed catcher had a triple, a double, scored three runs and had seven total bases in the win.
