Harbors Home Health and Hospice expands community education

Harbors Home Health and Hospice was selected as the recipient of more than $19,000 in donations at the March 2025 100+ Harbor Women Who Care giving event.
The funds were awarded after Harbors was nominated alongside two other local nonprofits and chosen by the attendees for the organization’s commitment to caring for patients and families throughout the community.
Rather than using the funds internally, Harbors leadership saw the award as an opportunity to give back through community education focused on aging and end-of-life planning.
When Angie Brown, director of development, and David Quigg, CEO, began working at Harbors Home Health and Hospice, they noticed a recurring theme in conversations with patients and families receiving hospice care. Many members of the elderly population had not yet discussed or planned for end-of-life decisions.
“Families often find themselves trying to make difficult decisions during an already emotional time,” Brown said. “We realized there was a real need in our community to talk about planning ahead and understanding available resources.”
In response, Harbors launched the “Aging Safely at Home” educational series in the fall of 2024. The program provides helpful tips, resources, and guidance for individuals and families navigating aging, healthcare decisions, and planning for the future. Thanks to the generous support from the 100+ Harbor Women Who Care donation, the program has been able to expand significantly throughout Grays Harbor and Pacific counties.
Harbors Home Health and Hospice provided care for more than 350 hospice patients in 2025, and the number continues to grow each year. Through the Aging Safely at Home series, the organization hopes to encourage residents to begin conversations with healthcare providers and loved ones about their wishes and final arrangements.
Many of the educational sessions are hosted in partnership with Timberland Regional Library, helping make the information accessible to residents across multiple communities. Harbors is also seeking partnerships with churches, community groups, and senior living facilities interested in hosting future classes.
In addition to education efforts, Harbors continues to raise funds to directly support hospice patients and their families. On March 29 at 3 p.m., the organization will host its 3rd Annual Tea Party fundraiser at the Harbors Home Health and Hospice office in Hoquiam.
Funds raised during the event help patients facing financial hardship during end-of-life care. Many families unexpectedly need items such as twin-sized bed sheets for hospital beds, wheelchair ramps, assistance with electricity bills, or food support. Donations allow Harbors to provide one-time assistance for these needs at the discretion of the organization’s leadership team.
