When it comes to “slicing” through the water, Aberdeen youngsters take back seats to no one as far as Bus Fairbairn and Fred Timm are concerned.

Those two are the instructors at Miller natatorium. They conduct classes from the time school takes up in the morning until the last class finishes up in the afternoon. First, second and third graders in Aberdeen grade school are given three lessons during the course of a school year to become “acquainted” with the H2O substance. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders receive 10 lessons and actually begin to look like swimmers.

Junior high students, getting 20 lessons, are able to use all strokes. Sophomores and juniors are taught life-saving and they take to the pool twice a week. Seniors trek to the natatorium every day during one school quarter. And when the last day arrives, Fairbairn and Timm usually tell them something like this: “We have taught you seniors all that we know about swimming. Now it’s up to you.”

Shopping center developer David Morgan will pass on “some very good news” very soon, the Hoquiam council was cheered to learn last night.

Kenneth Hubbard, assistant Urban Renewal director, reported that the Auburn realtor will visit Hoquiam next Monday with “some very good news.”

“Morgan wants to meet with city officials and Urban Renewal staffers to discuss the latest developments,” Hubbard said.

When he visited the council last month, Morgan explained that he was having no trouble lining up smaller stores for the center, “It’s the big one that we need.” Presumably, then, the “very good news” concerns the coveted department store.

Aberdeen used a quick start to hold off Centralia, 7-6, in a Black Hills League girls’ fast pitch opener Thursday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

“I was impressed with the first inning,” Bobcat coach Ken Nidick said. “We came right out and had three hits and took advantage of their errors. We set the tone.”

“We hit the ball well, played well defensively and got good pitching,” Nidick said, noting that Aberdeen hurler Tomika Gilbert was named Bobcat Player of the Game by her teammates.
