BOYS SOCCER

Elma 7, Tenino 0

Elma scored six goals in the first half en route to a dominant 7-0 season-opening victory over Tenino at Davis Field in Elma.

Elma (1-0) scored three of its six first-half goals in the first 20 minutes and the Eagles never looked back.

In a play that Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said “was my favorite goal of the game,” Elma junior Manny Hernandez drove deep into Tenino territory and sent a feed through the box and onto the awaiting foot of Eagle forward Alexis Bautista, whose back-post finish gave Elma a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.

Eagle junior Canon Seaberg gave Elma a 3-0 lead by scoring two consecutive goals just over five minutes apart in the first half. Seaberg took advantage of a miscue from the Tenino back line to score in the 15th minute, followed by a penalty-kick goal in the 20th minute after Tenino was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

Elma senior midfielder Rodrigo Luna then got into the act, feeding senior forward Gavin Blakett on a goal in the 25th minute and Hernandez on a score in the 34th minute.

Four minutes later, Canon Seaberg fed younger brother Cason Seaberg for a goal to give Elma a 6-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Elma scored on a Tenino own-goal off a deflected cross in the 69th minute of play.

After the game, Elma head coach Carson Seaberg spoke about how with just a few days of practice under their belts, his team’s play began to show signs of wearing down in the latter stages of the game.

“I thought as the game wore on, you could see the fatigue from the lack of training and that’s to be expected. With that came some less technical play than we wanted,” he said. “But overall, it was well-played. … Overall, we put a lot of pressure on them in the first half with six goals and played pretty clean.”

Elma goal keepers Andy Salvatierra and Mak Flores split time in goal to share the shutout victory and only faced one real threat in the match — on a breakaway attempt Flores thwarted late in the game.
