Aberdeen scored just enough points to edge Tumwater 94-92 in a Senior Night victory on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor YMCA in Hoquiam.

Bobcats junior Litzy Orona led the way for Aberdeen with two victories — in the 200 yard individual medley (2:36.66) and in the 100 yard backstroke (1:09.54) — as the Bobcats won seven of the meet’s 12 events.

The meet opened with Aberdeen taking the top two spots in the 200 yard medley relay, led by the team of senior Katelyn Ancich, junior Anna Matisons, and sophomores Ava Benn and Harnoor Jandu to place first with a time of 2:11.36.

Aberdeen followed with wins by freshman Mija Hood (200 yard freestyle, 2:18.55); Orona; sophomore Keara Burns (500 freestyle, 6:47.53); junior Anna Matisons (100 breaststroke, 1:12.98) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Hood, Burns, Orona and senior Kennedy Hatton (4:14.31).

“This was a huge win considering they are also a very strong and competitive team,” Aberdeen head coach Tiffany Montoure said. “Great swims by all.”

The Bobcats honored seniors Ancich, Hatton, Lily Schreiber, Mady Baudais and Morgann Waite on Senior Night.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Hoquiam 3, Aberdeen 0

Hoquiam rebounded from a gut-wrenching defeat a day earlier to defeat Aberdeen in straight sets on Wednesday at Aberdeen High School.

One day after falling to league-rival Montesano after leading 2-0, Hoquiam (6-2 overall) defeated Aberdeen (2-9) by scores of 29-27, 25-5 and 25-19.

Starting off “with no energy,” according to Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich, the Grizzlies took advantage of some early Bobcats mistakes to take the first set 29-27 before Hoquiam found its footing.

“(Aberdeen) was very scrappy and dug up a lot of what we were throwing at them,” Bozich said. “In the second set, we started serving really well, passing much better and talking a lot more.”

In a back-and-forth third set, Hoquiam capitalized on Aberdeen sending some free balls back to the the Grizzlies side of the net, where setter Ella Folkers distributed kill opportunities to hitters Kamryn Krohn (7 kills), Faith Prosch (7 kills), Kristina Goulet (5 kills) and Jessie Dayton (4 kills).

Folkers dished out 24 assists in the contest while Graci Bonney-Spradlin (29 digs) and Krohn (19 digs) leading the Hoquiam defensive effort.

Ashlinn Cady went 17-for-17 with five aces in service for Hoquiam, with Goulet also perfect from the service line (16-16).

“I am really proud of how my team bounced back after a tough five-setter last night,” Bozich said, adding the loss of one of the league’s standout players in middle blocker Chloe Kennedy — who went down with a left knee injury in the second set against Montesano — was a mental hurdle her team had to deal with.

“Losing a teammate the way we did can really effect team chemistry. It was hard to come out tonight still with that on all our minds but we fought through and started to play like we know how.”

According to Bozich, an MRI on Wednesday revealed Kennedy suffered a partially torn ACL and will have another MRI next week to determine the severity of the injury.

Kennedy was in attendance during Wednesday night’s game, cheering on the Grizzlies from the Hoquiam bench.

Aberdeen was led by Merryn Bruner (13 digs), libero Claire Mottinger (9 digs), Emmersyn Yakovich (9 digs), Lilly Camp (4 kills) and Michelle Jauragui (3 kills).

After a coming off a four-set league loss to Rochester the previous evening, Aberdeen head coach Desiree Glanz said she saw a more competitive effort from her team on Wednesday.

“Huge improvements tonight in our serving game and we had some solid passing,” she said. “The girls are setting goals and re-evaluating their play (after Tuesday’s loss). We are really focusing on staying up, fighting and finishing a game to the very end.”

Aberdeen JV and C-teams won on Wednesday, with Glanz commending Eilie Scott and Alyvia Lamont for having solid service games.

Castle Rock 3, Raymond 0

Raymond had its winning streak snapped at 17 games with a straight-set loss to Castle Rock on Wednesday at Castle Rock High School.

In an impromptu matchup that came about due to previous opponent cancellations, Raymond — the WIAA’s second-ranked team in the 2B class RPI rankings — traveled south to take on the state’s top team in the 1A RPI rankings, losing to the Rockets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-17.

“Castle Rock is a very talented team and it was difficult for us to find weak spots to exploit, because there weren’t any,” Raymond head coach Bob Swogger said. “They’re pretty defensively and offensively solid. We did compete well and even though it was a loss, we were pushed and made to work for the first time this season.”

Senior outside hitter Kyra Gardner led Raymond (9-1) with 12 kills and three aces.

Karsyn Freeman had five kills and “a good night, defensively,” according to Swogger.

Kyndal Koski had 28 digs for the Seagulls in the non-league contest against the Rockets (10-1).
