Tuesday Softball Roundup: Montesano offense, Timmons lead Bulldogs to sweep of Elma

Montesano scored early and starting pitcher Riley Timmons made the lead stick in a 7-3 win over Elma in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Dick Tagman Field in Montesano.

Montesano was hot from the start, scoring six runs in the first, highlighted by Paige Lisherness’ two-run home run and an RBI double off the bat of Kylee Wisdom.

Timmons held Elma scoreless through the first five innings until Elma (0-7, 0-5) got to her for three runs in the sixth, highlighted by Hannah Warren’s two-run double down the left-field line to make it a 7-2 ballgame.

Elma would follow with an unearned run on an error, but Timmons stayed the course, retiring four the final five Eagles she faced to notch the victory.

Jordan Karr went 3-for-3 and Lisherness added a double and two runs scored to her stat line to lead the Bulldogs.

Timmons allowed two earned runs on three hits with 14 strikeouts and six walks in the complete-game victory.

Mia Monroe took the loss for the Eagles, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings pitched.

Montesano 8, Elma 5

For the second straight game, Montesano took a big lead early on and rallied late for an 8-5 victory in the nightcap to sweep the doubleheader over Elma.

Montesano leadoff hitter Paige Lisherness started the Bulldogs off with a bang, belting a double to left field and coming around to score on an error for a “Little League home run” to put Monte up 1-0.

Monte’s next three batters collected base hits off Elma starter Mia Monroe, with Kylee Wisdom driving in Jordan Karr with a double for a 2-0 Bulldogs lead.

Monte would score two runs on a Carsyn Wintrip bunt and subsequent throwing error to make it a 4-0 game and another run on Elma’s third error of the inning just a few batters later for a 5-0 lead.

Elma cut into Monte’s lead in the second when Hannah Warren smacked a double to right field, driving in two runs.

In the top of the third Elma clawed to within a run when Aaleigha Weld singled home Janessa Sample and came around to score later in the inning on a Montesano error on a fly ball, making the score 5-4.

Elma would tie the game in the top of the fifth when Emmie Spencer, who was aboard with a single, scored on a Montesano error off a ground ball hit by Brooklyne Swarts.

But the Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Danica Bexton coming up clutch with a two-out, two-run triple to give Monte the 8-5 lead.

Timmons closed out the game by retiring the final six batters in a row to secure the victory, her second of the day.

Karr led the way again for Montesano, going 4-for-4 and thus a perfect 7-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Timmons tossed 4 2/3 innings of relief for starter Reghann Fairbairn, allowing one run and one hit with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The two teams will face off once more in the regular season at 5 p.m. on Friday in Elma.

Hoquiam took the field for the first time since April 1 and earned an 11-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Tenino on Tuesday in Tenino.

Avery Howard and Ashlinn Cady drove in three runs apiece in the game as the Grizzlies (6-3, 4-1) scored seven runs in the top of the second to take an 8-3 lead.

Hoquiam pitcher Carron Blood picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out seven in the complete-game victory.

Hoquiam earned the twin-bill sweep with a 7-1 victory over Tenino in the nightcap.

Hoquiam pitcher Kayte Sauer held Tenino to one unearned run on five hits while striking out seven in tossing a complete-game victory.

Graci Bonney-Spradlin led the Grizzlies at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBI.

Hoquiam hosts Rochester at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Forks scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand Ocosta its first loss of the season 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday in Forks.

Ocosta (7-2, 6-2 2B Pacific) trailed 4-3 before scoring four runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Josie Scheuber and a two-run triple off the bat of Annika Hollingsworth.

But Forks (5-4, 5-3) responded in with four runs in the seventh, winning the game on Elizabeth Soto’s walk-off RBI single.

Hollingsworth took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Ocosta was swept in a doubleheader for the first time this season after suffering a 10-4 loss to Forks in the nightcap.

Ocosta fell behind 7-1 after the Spartans scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Wildcats faced a 10-1 deficit, its largest of the season, before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seven on three straight RBI singles by Hollingsworth, Jessie Gilbert and Brynn Rasmus.

Despite outhitting Forks 10-9, Ocosta uncharacteristically had just one extra-base hit in the game.

Gilbert took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Ocosta hosts Oakville in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
