Ocosta 1-1 (4-3) Onalaska

ONALASKA — The incoming rain and windstorm greeted both Onalaska and Ocosta on Thursday and the Wildcats made their chances count for a 1-1 (4-3) shootout win in Central 2B League play.

Down 1-0 after 60 minutes, the Wildcats got a deflected free kick right to Kjirstin Hopfer, who knocked the ball into the net for the tie in the 65th minute. After a defensive struggle, with the wind playing havoc on the ball, the match went into a penalty kick shootout.

In the shootout, Onalaska took a 1-0 lead. From there, two Logger misses were greeted by four straight Wildcats — Mercedes Denny, Rebecca Holm, Hopfer and Teal Mitby — to end the shootout.

“The ball in the air was flying away,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “Everyone was miserable. It was an ugly game.”

On Monday, Ocosta (5-5, 7-5 overall) travels to Adna.

Elma meet

ELMA — A sloppy trail didn’t stop Elma’s Dylan Volz from running a career-best time to win this multi-school meet at Vance Creek Park on Thursday afternoon.

Volz ran away from the field at 18:16 to win the race, leading the Eagles to a team win over Hoquiam, 22-35. Hoquiam’s Savannah Lutz won the girls race.

“I thought Dylan ran a great race,” Elma head coach Dave Beeler said. “With the condition of the course and the weather, he ran his best all-time race. (Drew Fisher) came in fifth and ran a (personal best) as well. Overall, I thought the team ran really strong and stepped up in the weather.”

“Savannah had the lead for quite a while before winning,” Hoquiam head coach Carly Giles said. “There were no injuries and most everyone ran for fun, some even sliding on their bellies to finish their races in the rain.”

Giles cited Oscar Hoya and Carlos Juarez, who finished third and fourth overall in the boys race.

On Thursday, both teams will travel to Lake Sylvia Park for the Evergreen 1A League meet.

Wishkah sweeps Oakville

At Wishkah, the Loggerettes were able to pass effectively to run their offense en route to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 win over Oakville in Coastal 1B League play on Thursday.

“As a team, we did well getting our passes up to the setter,” Wishkah head coach Darci McMaster said. “We would like to cite Erica Bomhoff for her all around play. She continues to hustle and be a consistent server for us each match.”

On Monday, Wishkah (4-2 in league) hosts North Beach.
