Thursday evening marked an impressive achievement for one local student-athlete during the day’s local prep games.

GIRLS SOCCER

Montesano 4, Hoquiam 0

Montesano midfielder Brooke Streeter scored two goals and recorded an assist to join the prestigious 50/50 club for her prep career in a 4-0 win over host Hoquiam on Thursday.

The senior midfielder ended the evening with 50 goals and 54 assists in her prep career. It was the final regular-season game on the schedule for both teams.

Streeter, a four-year starter that will play soccer for Westminster College (Salt Lake City) next fall, was still processing her achievement after the match.

“It’s kind of crazy to be honest. Obviously, I like to assist more than I like to score,” she said before turning attention toward her teammates and coaches. “I’m proud of my team for getting me there. It’s not just a single effort. Everyone has helped me along the way.”

Streeter explained she knew she needed just two goals to get to 50 entering Thursday’s game.

“Before the game, I knew I only needed two more goals, and it was kind of on the back of my mind,” she said. “I was hoping I’d get the second one in a league match, because I thought that would be pretty cool. It just kind of hit me that is a lot of goals to get in a high school career, and I’m almost done with high school, so it kind of shocked me a little bit.”

As for any added pressure the looming achievement may have brought, Streeter said it was self-inflicted.

”Not really from anybody else, it was just kind of a personal goal I wanted to achieve. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t really care because it wasn’t my main goal,” she said. “(My main goal) was to win as a team. I don’t really think you win a game just by one individual player’s actions. I think you win together. That’s always been my goal, is helping everyone along because I’m not going to be playing for Monte my whole life. I only have four years so it really depends on how everyone else does and making sure they get better.”

Streeter will not undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest girls soccer players ever to put on a Bulldog jersey. In addition to the 50/50 club, the four-year starter was named 1A Evergreen League Offensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-State honors last season.

“When I entered the program, I didn’t even think I was good enough to play varsity,” Streeter admitted, reflecting on her time as a freshman player cracking the varsity lineup. “So it will be something I’ll get to tell my kids when I’m older, ‘Hey, your mom was a good soccer player.’ I think that is really cool.”

Black Hills 3, Aberdeen 1

Aberdeen finished the 2A Evergreen League season with a 3-1 loss to Black Hills at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The loss was a tough pill for Aberdeen to swallow, as the Wolves leap frogged the Bobcats (8-5 overall, league) for the No. 3 seed entering the one-week postseason tournament set to start today. Black Hills earned the spot based on goal differential (5-4).

The Bobcats fell behind 1-0 off a rebound of a save from Aberdeen goal keeper Char Gutierrez in the 33rd minute.

That was the only goal allowed by an Aberdeen defense that kept the game within reach in the first half.

“For how badly we played, our defense did pretty well because they didn’t have a lot of great opportunities,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “To be down 1-0, we were in pretty good shape because we didn’t play great.”

Aberdeen was the aggressor in the first 20 minutes of the second half, winning more 50/50 balls and gaining more possession time and offensive chances than in the first half.

But it didn’t matter much, as the Wolves were able to double the lead on a goal in the 52nd minute off a direct free kick from just out side the 18-yard box.

Aberdeen responded when freshman midfielder Annie Troeh was fouled from behind just inside the penalty area, and the Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Midfielder Emma Green slotted the PK into the back of the net to cut the Wolves lead to 2-1 with 21:30 remaining in the game.

But just under seven minutes later, Black Hills would gain an all-important two-goal lead with a goal in the penalty area to take a 3-1 lead.

The Wolves were able to run out the clock and send Aberdeen into fourth place with the loss.

The Bobcats will host an opening-round playoff game against Rochester at 1 p.m. today.

Aberdeen JV tied Black Hills JV, 1-1.

Kallie Knutson scored the goal for the Bobcats.

Montesano head coach Pat Pace cited McKenna Wecker, Maia Young and Landree Dohrmann for “good defense in the back row” with Hannah Tupper and Maddi Shields cited for “coming off the bench to serve in clutch situations.”

Gallinger wasn’t the only setter to have a huge night on Thursday as her counterpart, Hoquiam’s Ella Folkers, had 41 assists in the contest.
