GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Black Hills 0, Aberdeen 0 (Black Hills wins 4-3 on penalty kicks)

For the second-straight game, the Aberdeen Bobcats battled an opponent to a scoreless game at the end of regulation.

But in contrast to their previous contest, Aberdeen ended up on the wrong end of a penalty-kick shootout as the Bobcats fell to Black Hills 4-3 on penalty kicks Thursday in Tumwater.

After getting off to a slow start, Aberdeen (6-2 overall, 3-2 2A Evergreen) exhibited high pressure and aggressive play in pinning Black Hills in its defensive end for the majority of the second half.

But Aberdeen failed to get the tie-breaking goal and the game went to penalty kicks after the overtime period.

In the shootout, Aberdeen senior Char Gutierrez converted her penalty kick and Lexi Durr followed with a conversion as well.

A Black Hills miss put Aberdeen up 2-1, but three of the next four Bobcats were off target on their attempts, with Aman Cheema the lone make.

Gutierrez was able to block one of the Wolves’ shots in the shootout but it wasn’t enough as Black Hills converted its final two attempts after two straight Aberdeen misses to pick up the victory.

“We played pretty well, getting stronger as the game wore on, and I think we are improving our touch and communication each game,” Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming said, citing the play of Aili Scott, Scotlyn Lecomte, Annie Troeh, Cindy Galvan and Dominique Trevino as having “solid games.”

The loss dropped Aberdeen to third place in the league, a game behind Black Hills and 1.5 games back of league-leading Tumwater.

Aberdeen’s JV team won 2-0 on Thursday. Rylee Brown and Esmerelda Vega scored the Bobcats goals.

Elma 4, Castle Rock 2

All four Eagles goals were scored by freshman as Elma defeated Castle Rock 4-2 on Thursday at Davis Field in Elma.

Freshmen Beta Valentine led the way with two goals with teammates Mylie Seaberg and Valerie Echeverria scoring a goal apiece for Elma (3-2-1 overall).

Seaberg got things started for Elma with a goal off an assist from Eliza Sibbett in the 15th minute.

Eight minutes later, Valentine took a throw in, spun and ripped a low, hard shot into the back of the Rockets net for a 2-0 lead.

After Castle Rock scored on a deflection that turned into an Elma own-goal, Valentine scored in stoppage time at the end of the first half when she took a through pass from midfielder Janessa Sample to make it a 3-1 game at halftime.

In the second half, Castle Rock scored to make it 3-2 before Echeverria scored on a shot to the upper corner after receiving a feed from Chloe Clark in the final minute of the game.

“I like how we got a lot of width and earned a lot of corners,” said Elma head coach Evan Valentine before commenting on the progress of his young core of players. “I think there is still a lot more understanding of the game and confidence still to come. I think there is a lot of upside. The feeling is pretty high with this team. It’s really nice to see.”
