Thursday Prep Football Roundup: Raymond and Ocosta lose, PWV wins crossover game

Titans earn 2B state playoff berth; Seagulls, Wildcats to compete in Saturday’s tiebreaker

2B District IV Crossover

Wahkiakum 22, Raymond 10

Missing one of its top running backs and with the another playing at less than 100 percent, the Raymond Seagulls offense struggled to produce in a 22-10 loss to Wahkiakum in Thursday’s 2B District IV Crossover playoff game at Stewart Field.

Playing without senior running back Patrick Edwards, who was out with an MCL sprain, and a hampered McCartney Maden (ankle sprain), the Raymond rushing attack — usually good for 250-plus yards per game — failed to hit the century mark. The Seagulls ran for a total of 81 yards, 54 of those coming on a Joseph Villalpondo touchdown run that gave Raymond (6-4 overall) a temporary 10-6 lead early in the second quarter.

But Wahkiakum (5-5) responded with a 13-yard touchdown run by Luke Brown at the 6:52 mark and took a 20-10 lead into halftime when Brown scored with 20 seconds left in the first half. Brown finished with three rushing TDs in the game.

While Raymond’s defense held the Mules off the scoreboard in the second half, Wahkiakum was able to extend drives with third-down conversions to limit Raymond’s time of possession. The Seagulls had two quick possessions in the third quarter and were shut out in the half.

The Mules squashed any Seagulls’ comeback hopes when their defense recorded a safety and recovered the subsequent onside kick with a minute left to secure the win.

Villalpondo carried the ball four times for 59 yards and a touchdown in the loss. Maden played sparingly in the first half, rushing five times for seven yards.

With the victory, the Mules earned a berth to the 2B state playoffs.

Raymond, meanwhile, will compete in Saturday’s three-way “Kansas City Tiebreaker” for the final district berth into the state tournament. The tiebreaker is formatted similar to overtime in college football and is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday at Centralia High School.

The loss also snaps Raymond’s six-game winning streak.

2B District IV Crossover

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 46, Winlock 0

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley turned a relatively close game into a second-half route as the Titans walloped Winlock 46-0 in Thursday’s 2B District IV Crossover playoff game at Willapa Valley High School.

The victory secures a spot in the 2B state tournament for the Titans.

The PWV offense, boosted by the return of top running back Peter Hamilton, who had been out since week three with an injury, took an early lead. Quarterback Logan Walker scored on an 8-yard scamper in the first quarter followed by Hamilton’s 2-yard TD run to give the Titans a 16-0 lead at halftime.

The Titans (9-2) poured it on the Cardinals (3-7) in the third quarter, scoring 30 points in the frame to seize control of the game.

“We had a little fatherly talk with them at halftime,” PWV assistant coach John Peterson said of the Titans coaching staff’s halftime speech. “After the half, they came out and played well.”

Max Smith scored on a 4-yard run and a Hamilton 2-point conversion extended PWV’s lead to 24-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Titans kicker Adam Smaciarz’s squib kick bounced off the chest of a Winlock player and was recovered by PWV. Smith turned the turnover into points when he scored the Titans’ second touchdown within 30 seconds on a 5-yard run at the 7:35 mark.

Hamilton added an 8-yard scoring run followed by a 33-yard TD jaunt late in the third quarter to round out the scoring at 46-0.

Hamilton was a difference-maker for the Titans, rushing for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.

“We’re pretty glad to have him back,” Peterson said.

Smith added 98 yards on 19 carries and two scores for a PWV offense that ran for 256 yards on the evening.

Equally as impressive was a Titans defense which held the Cardinals to just 70 total yards and had six sacks as a team.

Linebacker Luke Gerow lead PWV with nine tackles. Kiah Carter had six tackles and Sam Western had an interception for the Titans.

PWV awaits its 2B state-playoff seed and opponent, which is expected to be announced on Sunday.

2B District IV Crossover

Adna 49, Ocosta 0

The Ocosta Wildcats fell behind quickly and never recovered in a 49-0 loss to Adna in a 2B District IV Crossover game on Thursday in Adna.

The undefeated Pirates (10-0) scored 35 points in the first quarter to put the game out of reach early. Adna quarterback Braden Thomas hit Chance Fay for a 61-yard scoring pass to open the scoring and it was all Adna from that point on.

After the long TD pass, Adna got first-quarter TD runs from Cole Fay (14 yards), Elmer Loose (6 yards), Cole Fay again (8 yards) and Thomas (9 yards).

Loose scored on a 56-yard run with 8:48 in the second quarter to give Adna a 42-0 halftime lead.

The Pirates’ Tyler Werner scored on a 7-yard run as time expired to complete the 49-0 rout.

Ocosta (5-4) will now compete in Saturday’s three-way “Kansas City Tiebreaker” with a chance at earning District IV’s final state-playoff berth. The tiebreaker is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Centralia High School.
