Thrower scores 41 as Choker women beat Everett

MOUNT VERNON — Alexia Thrower tossed in 41 points as Grays Harbor College rallied from a large early deficit to beat third-ranked Everett, 106-95, on the final day of the Skagit Valley Holiday Women’s Basketball Classic on Saturday.

The leading scorer in the NWAC, Thrower hit 13-of-16 field goals and 15-of-16 free throws as the Chokers went unbeaten in the tourney and improved to 12-1 overall.

Needless to say, Thrower was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Grays Harbor’s Angela Sikora, who made a dozen 3-pointers in Friday’s win over Skagit Valley, also made the all-tournament team.

The Chokers found themselves in a 33-20 hole after one quarter but forged a 48-all halftime deficit. Grays Harbor led narrowly for much of the second half, but pulled away by beating the press for layins and hitting free throws in the fourth quarter.

Everett stayed close by making 18 of 37 from 3-point range.

Hoquiam’s Isabel Hernandez came off the bench to contribute 15 points for the Chokers.

“A total unselfish team effort is what allows this team to grow,” GHC coach Chad Allan said. “We have more work to do preparing for league.”

The Chokers have one more non-leaguer on tap, traveling to Olympic on Friday.
