Aberdeen’s Nelson, Montesano’s Schweppe win at Eason Invitational

Aberdeen’s Henry Nelson and Montesano’s Haley Schweppe won their respective races at the 35th gearUP Eason Invitational on Saturday at the Snohomish Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.

In the prestigious annual event featuring a host of the state’s top competitors across all classes, Nelson and Schweppe returned to the Twin Harbors as victors in their respective 800-meter races.

Nelson ran a personal-best time of 1:53.42 to win the boys 800, edging Stanwood’s Ryan Khoury by 0.55 seconds and nearly breaking the meet record of 1:53.40.

Nelson’s time was the third best this season across any class in the state of Washington and set a new Aberdeen High School record, breaking the time of Jim Boora, who held the record since 1964.

In the girls competition, Schweppe outclassed the field with a victory in the 800. The Bulldogs sophomore was the only competitor to post a sub-2:20 time, finishing with a season-best 2:19.81, nearly two full seconds ahead of Jackson’s Olivia Friedrich, who placed second with a time of 2:21.61.

Aberdeen was the only Twin Harbors school with multiple competitors at the meet.

Bobcats thrower Rylee Brooks set a new personal-record mark of 36 feet, 0.5 inches to place fifth in the girls shot put.

Brooks and Bella Bruner each set new personal bests to place sixth and eighth, respectively, in the girls discus.

Other top 10 placements for Aberdeen included Isaac Garcia with a ninth-place finish in the boys long jump (21-1.5) and Ailyn Haggard, who placed ninth in the girls 1,600-meter race with a new personal-best time of 5:12.53.
