Oakville 3, Lake Crescent 2

The Oakville Acorns survived a late charge from Lake Crescent en route to a five-set victory on Thursday at Oakville High School.

“I could not be more proud of how the team has responded to each game challenge,” Acorns head coach Jessica Spitzer said. “They have fought hard every game but tonight they managed to keep it together and pull out a win. Our crowd really helped to keep the girls’ energy up.”

The Acorns took the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-11 before Lake Crescent stormed back to take sets three and four, 25-15 and 25-18, respectively.

Oakville then took a close fifth and final set, 15-13.

Alexis Starr-Wright had nine aces and two kills for Oakville.

Joanna Kukhar added five kills and four aces for the Acorns while Shelby Petty added six aces for Oakville.

Aberdeen 3, Tenino 0

The Aberdeen Bobcats won their second consecutive match with a straight-set victory over Tenino on Thursday at Tenino High School.

The Bobcats won by scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-23.

Jaylyn McDaniel (13-for-13 service) led an Aberdeen squad that was solid from the service line.

“We served really well with 17 aces as a team,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Basler said. ” We spread the offense well. With all those aces we didn’t need much offense but we took advantage where we could.”

After dropping its first three matches of the season, Aberdeen (2-3) won back-to-back games with Tuesday’s win over Hoquiam and Thursday’s triumph against Tenino.

Aberdeen starts 2A Evergreen league play when it hosts Centralia at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tenino 16 22 23 — 0

South Bend 3, Raymond 1

The South Bend Indians got a team high 19 kills and 16 digs from Jessica Sanchez en route to a 3-1 non-league victory over Raymond on Thursday at South Bend High School.

“We struggled tonight, but a win is a win,” South Bend head coach Kelsey Staats said. “We had our lowest serving percentage thus far and that really hurt us.”

South Bend’s Karley Reidinger had 14 kills and three blocks for the Indians, two of which happened at critical moments of the match and provided momentum swings, according to Staats.

South Bend (3-2) took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21 before Raymond rallied to win the third set, 25-18.

But the Indians proved to have too much gumption on the night as they took the fourth set by three points (25-22) to win the match.

Raymond (2-3) was led by Tina Sypaphay’s 10 kills. Isabel Mora added six kills and three aces for the Seagulls.

“I thought we played really well despite the loss,” said Raymond head coach Bob Swogger, who was without the services of senior outside hitter Sadie Warnstadt (illness). “We had to shuffle some players around but we adjusted well to that.”

PREP SOCCER

King’s Way Christian 7, Elma 1

Elma (4-3-1) allowed three goals in the first half in a one-sided loss to King’s Way Christian at Daivs Field on Thursday.

All three KWC first-half goals came off the foot of MacKenzie Ellertson, who put the Knights (2-1-2) ahead in the 12th minute with a shot from 25-feet out.

Elma head coach Scott Rockey said cold and flu season forced him to juggle the lineup.

“We had two illnesses on the defense we were dealing with tonight and it was just one of those games,” he said. “We learned some things but it wasn’t the learning game I really wanted because we didn’t have the players on the field who normally play the positions.”

Brooke Sutherby got her team on the board in the 76th minute a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that she released with two Knights defenders on her heels.

KWC 3 4 – 7

Elma 0 1 – 1

Centralia 2, Hoquiam 1

A 17-save performance from goalkeeper Jade Cox wasn’t enough as Hoquiam suffered a 2-1 road loss to Centralia on Thursday.

Hoquiam (4-2-1) held off the Tigers until the 37th minute, when Centralia capitalized on a hard shot from outside the 18-yard box.

Centralia (1-5) scored again in the 61st minute, but the Grizzlies kept the game close with a goal from Sadie Carlyle off a pass from Tauni Hilliard.

Hoquiam failed to find the equalizer before time ran out.

“We couldn’t find a good rhythm on either side of the ball, every touch was a little too big, every pass a little too long,” Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann said.

Hoquiam 0 1 — 1

Centralia 1 1 —2

BOYS PREP GOLF

Hoquiam 165, La Center 187

If the Hoquiam Grizzlies keep golfing like this, they will be tough for anyone to beat.

Led by Josh Burgher’s match-low of 37, the Grizzlies’ top-four scorers shot no worse than a 43 as they defeated La Center, 165-187, on Thursday at Highland Golf Course.

In addition to Burgher’s score, Hoquiam’s Tayte Witherbee (42), Noah Sudderth (43) and Tyler Sundstrom (43) contributed to the Grizzlies final score.

Hoquiam head coach Larry Dublanko offered that while his team didn’t play their best golf on Thursday, their team depth proved invaluable in picking up the victory.

“We stumbled on our home course today. … That’s a little uncharacteristic of us,” he said. “Thankfully, we have some depth and that helped us.”

Chase Clark led La Center with a team-low round of 40.

Hoquiam moves to 6-0 on the season with the win.

Hoquiam (165) — Burgher (37), Witherbee (42), Sudderth (43), Sundstrom (43)

La Center (187) — Clark (40), Cole Entenman (47), Collin Newberry (50), Aaron Sundahl (50)
