Another impressive defensive effort led to a perfect regular season for Montesano after a 49-0 win over Elma in the East County Civil War on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Bulldogs (9-0 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) held the Eagles (4-5, 1-3) to 125 yards of offense and seven first downs en route to their fifth-consecutive shutout of the season.

Monte scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyson Perry to Terek Gunter followed by a 30-yard pick-six interception return by Bulldogs linebacker Mason Rasmussen off a tipped ball.

Monte took a 28-0 halftime lead on second-quarter touchdown runs by senior running backs Gabe Bodwell, for four yards, and Bode Poler, for 19 yards.

After the half, Rasmussen scored his second touchdown of the game on Perry’s second touchdown pass of the game.

Gunter scored on a 21-yard run in the third quarter for his second touchdown of the game and a 43-0 lead.

Perry connected with Poler for a 9-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

Perry completed 7-of-11 passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bulldogs rushed for 221 yards as a team and had four players rush for 50 yards or more, but 13 penalties kept the offense from playing at its full potential, according to Monte head coach Terry Jensen.

“Defensively, we played really well,” he said. “But we didn’t play how we are capable of playing on offense. … We had two touchdowns called back because of penalties and we didn’t play our best on offense.”

The Montesano defense forced six turnovers in the game – four interceptions and two fumbles – while also sacking Elma senior quarterback Carter Studers four times.

Rasmussen had two interceptions with Carter Crites and Gabe Pyhala each picking off Studer once.

Linebacker Peyton Damasiewicz had a pair of sacks and recovered a fumble with Bulldogs teammates Felix Romero (fumble recovery), Pyhala (sack) and Cam Taylor (sack) also making key plays on defense.

Jensen said Elma’s aggression on defense led to the Monte offense playing at a less-than-optimal clip in the regular-season finale.

“I thought Elma played really hard tonight. They created some of our mistakes I think just by how they were playing defense,” Jensen said. “We had too many holding calls and part of that is because of their aggressiveness and how hard they were playing.”

With the victory, third-ranked Montesano completes an unbeaten regular season and will be the No. 1 seed out of the 1A Evergreen League.

Monte will open its playoff run against Stevenson at 7 p.m. Friday at Montesano High School.

Elma enters the crossover round as the league’s No. 4 seed and will take on La Center at 7 p.m. Friday at La Center High School.

Onalaska 58, PWV 15

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley was flat out of the gate en route to a 58-15 non-league loss to Onalaska on Thursday at Onalaska High School.

PWV (5-4, 2-2 2B Central-North) fell behind 30-0 after the first quarter and were never really in the game after the Loggers (7-2) returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

Three penalties in their first offensive possession pushed the Titans back inside their own 10-yard line just before a pass from PWV quarterback Nathan Fluke was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

After three minutes of game time, PWV was down 16-0.

“It was a non-league game and the kids knew it,” said PWV head coach Nate Smith half-heartedly in jest. “They came out so flat it was crazy.”

PWV scored on a Fluke 28-yard pass to receiver Blaine King to cut the deficit to 30-7 at the end of one quarter.

In the fourth quarter and with both teams playing their reserves, PWV’s Conner Reyes returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown.

Brody Ritzman completed a pass to Ryan Clements for the two-point conversion.

Titans senior running back Blake Howard had 24 carries for 107 yards while King caught seven passes for 114 yards.

“I can’t take anything away from Onalaska, they’re a physical team and the run the ball hard,” Smith said. “It got out of hand in the first quarter, but our kids fought and played hard until the end.”

PWV will be the league’s No. 4 seed due to a tiebreaker coin flip and will host Rainier in a 2B pigtail game on Tuesday at Crogstad Field in Menlo (time to be determined).

Northwest Christian 60, Wishkah Valley 12

Wishkah Valley closed out its season with a 60-12 loss to 1B Coastal (6-man) League champion Northwest Christian on Saturday at Wishkah Valley High School.

The Loggers (2-6, 1-5 2B Coastal 6-man) were often their own worst enemy with bad snaps and fumbles thwarting multiple scoring chances and missed tackles on defense leading to touchdowns by the Wolverines (8-0, 7-0).

Loggers freshman quarterback Drew Stewart returned from an injury to play for the first time since the opening week of the season and went 2-for-4 for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Wishkah junior Aiden Wiedenmann, who was one of the WIAA’s Athletes of the Week two weeks ago, had 12 carries for 48 yards and caught a pass for a 60-yard touchdown.

Loggers sophomore Kohl Brandner returned a kick 70 yards for a touchdown while fellow sophomore Boady Dhooghe led the Wishkah defense with 9.5 tackles.

Loggers junior Matthew Erickson had 8.5 tackles and a strip sack in the game.

“The season wasn’t what we were hoping for, but overall I’m happy with the effort and looking forward to next year,” Wishkah head coach Eric Erickson said. “Our one senior missed the whole season with a broken arm, so we’re getting everyone who played back next year, plus we should be getting a big crop of young, new players coming up. Our biggest problem this year was injuries.”
