PREP FOOTBALL

Montesano 42, Elma 6

Montesano showed it can run its high-potency offense in the wet weather with a 42-6 victory over Elma on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.

The Bulldogs (8-1 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) scored early and often, taking the lead on a 44-yard run from senior running back Zach Timmons early in the first quarter followed by two straight touchdowns by senior receiver Toren Crites, one a 15-yard run and another on a 49-yard punt return to the house.

A scoring run by Carter Conklin-Smith followed by a short touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tyson Perry to Crites with just under 10 seconds left in the second quarter gave Monte a comfortable 35-0 lead at the break.

Timmons scored his second touchdown of the game on a 19-yard run with 8:40 to play in the third for a 42-0 lead and a running clock the rest of the way.

Elma (3-6, 1-3) scored against the Bulldogs for the first time since 2021 when senior quarterback Isaac McGaffey connected with sophomore running back Jaxon Brookins for a 50-yard touchdown with less than a minute to play in the game.

The victory gives Montesano a 82-59-6 record in their 147 all-time meetings.

“It was nice that we got into the bad elements again and we responded better to those elements than we did last week,” said Montesano head coach Terry Jensen, referencing a disheartening 13-7 loss to Nooksack Valley in similar rainy conditions a week prior. “It shows a little bit of growth and maturity in our kids and I think they recognize they missed an opportunity last week to control their destiny, in a way.”

Montesano’s defense allowed 54 total yards – including minus-11 rushing yards – surrendered two first downs (both in the fourth quarter) and forced three turnovers.

Seniors Isac Hawkins and Cris Tobar each recovered a fumble while senior defensive back Ashton McKinney intercepted a pass for the Bulldogs defense.

Timmons led Monte’s offense with 178 rushing yards and a pair of touchdown on 17 carries while Perry completed 12-of-18 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown without an interception.

McGaffey completed 2-of-9 passes for 65 yards, a touchdown and an interception, with Brookins and sophomore Colt Landstrom each catching a pass for the Eagles.

“We had a great week or practice and I thought we came out and dominated defensively,” Jensen said. “When you hold them to negative yards rushing, it just says something about our defense. I know the weather played into that for sure, but our kids just had a lot of fun and it was fun to see it in their faces. … I think they are excited for what’s next.”

What’s next for Montesano is a date in the 1A crossover round against Annie Wright next week at Montesano’s Jack Rottle Field (time, date to be determined).

Rochester 52, Hoquiam 0

Not much went right for Hoquiam in a 52-0 loss to Rochester on Friday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (3-6, 0-4 1A Evergreen) fell behind early as the Warriors (7-2, 3-1) used their power-running game to score three touchdowns and convert three two-point conversions for a 24-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Another three rushing touchdowns in the second quarter put Hoquiam in a 44-0 hole by halftime and a running clock in the second half.

The Warriors added another rushing touchdown in the third quarter followed by a Hoquiam bad snap into the end zone for a safety on the Grizzlies final possession to complete the scoring.

“Rochester’s run game and physicality was just too much for us,” Hoquiam head coach Jeremy McMillan said. “They executed well and overpowered us up front. They really did not make a lot of mistakes. There’s a reason why they’re a top 10 1A team.”

Defensively, Hoquiam was led by senior lineman Ryan Pullar (16 solo tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 3 assists), Nite Turpin (13 solo tackles, 2 TFL, 2 ast.), linebacker Joey Bozich (11 solo tackles, 2 ast.) and Ty Thao (10 solo tackles, ast.).

No Grizzlies offensive stats were provided.

Wishkah Valley 27, Clallam Bay 24

Wishkah Valley overcame a sizable deficit only to be declared winner before halftime in an odd 27-24 victory over Clallam Bay on Saturday at Wishkah Valley High School.

The Loggers (7-0, 6-0 1B Coastal 6-man League) trailed the Bruins (2-4, 2-2) 24-7 in the first quarter, but responded to take the lead with 20 straight points in the second frame, led by Kohl Brandner, who had nine carries for 174 yards and three touchdowns and returned a punt 50 yards for a score.

With the Loggers leading 27-24 and just under a minute left in the first half, Clallam Bay injuries began to pile up. The Bruins entered the 6-man contest with just nine available players and fell below the minimum amount when four players suffered injuries during the game.

The Bruins were forced to forfeit the remainder of the game, giving Wishkah its seventh win of the season.

“Clallam Bay is a good team and we’re happy to come out on top and remain undefeated,” Wishkah head coach Eric Erickson said.

Boady Dhooghe led Wishkah Valley on offense with nine tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Wishkah Valley faces Lake Quinault in a league game set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
