Ilwaco 52, Hoquiam 51
A big shot late in the fourth quarter turned out to be the difference in Hoquiam’s 52-51 loss to Ilwaco on Saturday at Hoquiam High School.
The Grizzlies (5-10 overall) held a four-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and led 51-49 in the game’s final moments.
But Ilwaco (5-8) made the most of its final possession when sophomore guard Chase Cunningham hit a 3-pointer to give the Fishermen the lead at 52-51.
Hoquiam had a chance to win in the final seconds of the game, but the Grizzlies “didn’t really get much of a look,” according to head coach Jeff Niemi, to suffer the loss.
The Grizzlies shot 38% from the field on 20-of-53 shooting, including 3 of 20 from the 3-point line (15%).
“It was looking like we were going to have four quarters of solid offense and then we scored four points in the fourth quarter,” Niemi said. “They switched to a 1-3-1 (zone defense). We knew they had that in their arsenal, we just didn’t execute against it. Right now, we are really in love the the three and I would say it’s not paying off for us. A lot of threes were shot against that 1-3-1, and there were a lot of misses.”
Sophomore point guard Lincoln Niemi led all scorers with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, six assists and five steals to lead Hoquiam.
Junior guard Joey Bozich added 13 points and four rebounds for a Grizzlies squad that was outrebounded 37-26 but committed just 10 turnovers to 19 for Ilwaco.
The Fishermen shot 42% from the floor on 19-of-45 shooting.
Hoquiam faces Aberdeen at 7 p.m. on Monday in Aberdeen.

Raymond-South Bend 53, Naselle 49
Raymond-South Bend overcame a halftime deficit to earn a 53-49 non-league victory over Naselle on Saturday at South Bend High School.
The Ravens (6-9) trailed 32-28 at halftime but seized the lead with a 16-7 third-quarter performance, thanks in large part to junior post Aaron Somero with 10 points in the frame.
“(Naselle) came out strong and we struggled to answer their intensity and strong shooting in the first half,” RSB head coach Jon Schray said. “We were able to collect ourselves and showed some great heart and chipped away until we were able to control the game through the fourth quarter.
The Ravens were led by senior guard Chris Quintana with 18 points.
Somero (12 points) and junior forward Chris Banker (10 pts.) also scored in double figures for RSB.
The Ravens host Mossyrock in a non-league game at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday at South Bend High School.
