GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Elma 44, Rochester 32
Elma found just enough offense to outpace Rochester for a 44-32 1A Evergreen League victory on Wednesday at Elma High School.
The Eagles (5-8 overall, 3-2 1A Evergreen) had just four points – all by sophomore forward Keke Bol – in a low-scoring first quarter.
But the Warriors (1-16, 0-5) didn’t fare any better, hitting just 2-of-12 shots in the first frame as the period ended in a 4-4 tie.
In the second quarter, Elma found some offense in the second quarter to take a 17-7 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to six points apiece from Bol and junior guard Olivia Moore.
After Rochester shaved four points off the Eagles lead with a 12-8 third quarter, Elma had its best offensive period of the game in the fourth.
Led by seven points from Moore, the Eagles scored 19 points over the final eight minutes of the game to earn the victory.
The Eagles sank 5-of-8 free throws in the final frame, with Bol draining 3 of 4 to help secure the victory.
Moore led Elma with 15 points followed closely by Bol with 14.
Amaya Lewis added six points for the Eagles, which shot 28% from the field on 15-of-54 shooting and hit 12-of-22 free throws (55%).
With the victory, the Eagles are firmly in third place in the 1A Evergreen League and sit a half game behind second-place Hoquiam.
Elma hosts Tenino in a league matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Ocosta 47, Lake Quinault 35
Ocosta had its best fourth-quarter performance of the season en route to a 47-35 victory over Lake Quinault on Wednesday at Lake Quinault High School.
The Wildcats (3-9, 2-4 1B Coastal) defeated the Elks (2-9, 0-6) for the second time in a week after trailing 21-20 at halftime and 25-24 after the two teams combined for eight total points in the third quarter.
But Ocosta had its best offensive fourth-quarter of the season, scoring 23 points to pull away with the victory.
Ocosta was led by sophomore Peyten Morris with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Elly Mirante had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while senior Gabby Ness scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists for the Wildcats.
Ocosta Annabelle Wolfley scored all six of her points in the Wildcats’ 23-point fourth quarter.
Ocosta hosts Mary M. Knight at 7 p.m. on Friday.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Ocosta 64, Lake Quinault 30
Ocosta got off to a good start and never looked back en route to a 64-30 victory over Lake Quinault on Wednesday in Amanda Park.
The Wildcats (11-4, 4-1 1B Coastal) outscored the Elks (1-11, 1-5) 23-5 to take control of the game in the first quarter.
Ocosta’s 6-foot-5 freshman phenom Sonny Beard scored nine of his game-high 17 points in the first quarter.
The Wildcats led 38-16 at halftime and outscored the Elks 15-6 in the third quarter, allowing Ocosta to rest its starters in the final frame.
“We got off to a quick start with our starters and were able to play a lot of different guys tonight,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “I thought as a team, we moved the ball around and did a good job of finding the open shooters.”
Dalton Welch (10 points) and Michael Priest (10 pts.) also scored in double figures for Ocosta.
Beard led the Wildcats with eight rebounds and three steals.
Ocosta went 26 for 58 from the field (45%) – including 20 of 39 (51%) from inside the 3-point line – and shot 6 of 10 from the free-throw line (60%).
The Elks were led by freshman Mason Pope with 11 points and shot 31% from the field on 12-of-39 shooting as a team.

Lake Quinault hosts Taholah at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Ocosta sits a half game behind Willapa Valley for the top spot in the 1B Coastal League and will face Taholah at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Taholah High School.

Willapa Valley 68, Morton-White Pass 58
Willapa Valley took off in the second half to beat Morton-White Pass 68-58 on Wednesday at Willapa Valley High School.
The Vikings (12-2) led 32-28 at the half and extended the lead to 12 points with a run in the third quarter.
Valley was led by sophomore power forward Brody Aust with a game-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Senior guard Nathan Fluke had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Lucas Lusk (11 points) and Blane King (10 pts.) also scored in double figures for Valley.
The Vikings face Pe Ell in a non-league game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in Menlo.

BOYS PREP SWIMMING
Aberdeen wins on Senior Night
On Wednesday afternoon, Aberdeen hosted the SWW Co-op at the YMCA of Grays Harbor for its final home dual meet of the season.
Early in the meet, Aberdeen honored its senior swimmers Denny Linker and Jacob Hallak.
Aberdeen registered four wins on the day against Hockinson (75-68), Seton Catholic (91-51), Washougal (94-37) and Ridgefield (96-15).
“To keep this short, Denny and Jacob are two solid young men who have been the foundation of this program for the past four seasons,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “It has been an honor to be their head coach. They are going to be successful on deck and in life.
“For the meet, this was a great day for the Bobcats, who were strong all meet. The (SWW Co-op) are a great group of swimmers and we will be competing with them in the postseason.”
The Bobcats picked up seven overall wins on the day, including two relay wins in the 200-yard medley (Hallak, Cole Nylander, Zeke Olson and Linker) and the 400 freestyle (Cooper Gill, Tyson Powell, Emmett Johnson, and Isaac Armenta).
Aberdeen will compete in the Southwest Washington Invitational on Feb. 1 in Longview.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Highline 77, Grays Harbor 71
Grays Harbor College lost to Highline 77-71 on Wednesday in Aberdeen.
Prashant Chouhan scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting (64%) to go along with nine rebounds for the Chokers (10-10, 2-2 NWAC West) in the loss.
In a game where both teams shot over 52% from the field, turnovers were key. GHC committed 13 turnovers to just six for Highline (16-5, 2-2), leading to 13 points off turnovers for the for the Thunderbirds.
Grays Harbor plays at Green River College at noon on Saturday in Auburn.
