Montesano 68, Hoquiam 40

Montesano all but locked up another 1A Evergreen League title with a 68-40 victory over Hoquiam on Friday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (13-5 overall, 6-0 1A Evergreen) got off to a good start despite leading scorer Jillie Dalan being limited due to foul trouble.

In Dalan’s stead, senior post Ava Schrader scored eight points in the first quarter for Montesano.

Monte led by nine after the first eight minutes of the game and held a comfortable 39-20 lead by halftime.

After the Grizzlies (10-7, 3-2) scored the first five points of the third quarter, the Bulldogs defense held Hoquiam to four points for the remainder of the quarter to maintain its sizable lead.

“So proud of the girls tonight. They just came out with a lot of intensity and energy,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “Everybody picked it up defensively and did their part. It was a total team win.”

Bulldogs sophomore point guard Tieander Olson put her name in the league MVP race with a huge performance. Olson scored 31 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists and had nine steals to dominate the court and draw praise from both head coaches.

“Tieander had a huge effort tonight and just did a great job,” Mansfield said.

“Olson proved to everyone why she plays with MVP passion and effort,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “Love seeing players like this who make everyone around them step up or pay the price.”

Schrader added 17 points, seven rebounds and eight steals for Montesano.

Dalan spent much of the game on the bench due to foul trouble and finished with two points and eight rebounds.

Montesano went 27 of 56 from the floor (48%) and shot 13 of 24 from the free-throw line (54%).

Hoquiam was led by Aaliyah Kennedy and Katlyn Brodhead with 11 and 10 points apiece, respectively.

Montesano had 29 rebounds to 25 for Hoquiam and committed 23 turnovers to 40 for Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies hit 14 of 39 shots from the field (36%).

“We had high hopes we had improved enough to give them a much better game,” Allan said. “I have nothing but pride for my players as growth against teams that attack our weaknesses are ugly and stressful. We had bright spots of course. But ultimately it is solely my fault for not having them better prepared. We learn and move forward.”

Montesano now sits two games up on Elma and 2.5 games ahead of Hoquiam for the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League.

“I just couldn’t be prouder of this group,” Mansfield said. “They’ve really started to come together these last couple of weeks.”

Both teams compete against league opponents at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

Hoquiam hosts Tenino while Montesano will be in Rochester to face the Warriors.

The Ravens (11-5, 3-1 2B Pacific) avenged their lone 2B Pacific League loss of the season thanks in large part to the performances of junior post Ava Baugher and junior guard Kassie Koski, who scored 18 and 14 points, respectively.
