GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Hoquiam 60, Rochester 30

Hoquiam capped off one of its best regular seasons in recent memory with a 60-30 drubbing over Rochester on Wednesday at Rochester High School.

The Grizzlies (13-7 overall, 6-2 1A Evergreen) won for the third consecutive game and seventh in its past eight contests by jumping out to an early 19-6 lead and holding the Warriors (2-18, 1-7) to nine points in the second half.

“Tonight was the last league game against a very improved Rochester program. We are not ones for making excuses, but I am so very proud of my whole team for not being able to practice for the past two days due to school closures and come out and play as resilient and hard as they did,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “It was a very challenging game where everything was highly contested in the paint and our crew just put on the hard hats and went to work. So proud of their mental and emotional growth.”

Katlyn Brodhead scored 16 points, dished out four assists and had six steals while Sydney Gordon also had 16 points to go along with six rebounds to lead the Grizzlies.

Forward Aaliyah Kennedy continued her stellar freshman season with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Hoquiam, which got contributions from a wide variety of players in the win.

“Lexi LaBounty and Nadine Stewart did all the little things tonight that allowed us to pull away on second half. I want to highlight Austyn Capoeman, who has been working tirelessly all season to get back after missing all last season with her best varsity minutes just in time for post season,” Allan said. “Four days off without a practice with everyone out of normal routines and schedules, then to just jump into a road game is not easy. So proud of how they came together.”

Hoquiam went 21 of 44 from the field (47%) and outrebounded the Warriors 30-27.

The Grizzlies forced 34 turnovers and had 25 steals, led by Brodhead and LaBounty with six apiece.

Hoquiam ends the season as the 1A Evergreen League’s No. 2 seed and will host a first-round district game on Wednesday (time, opponent to be determined).

Montesano 62, Elma 19

Montesano turned a close game into a rout in a 62-19 victory over Elma on Wednesday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (15-6, 8-0 1A Evergreen) capped off a perfect league record by turning what was a two-point first-quarter lead into a 32-12 halftime advantage.

Monte outscored the Eagles (6-13, 4-4) 20-5 in the third quarter and held Elma to nine points over the final three quarters of the game to earn the win.

“We just had an overall exceptional team effort tonight,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We didn’t shoot particularly well, but we pounded the boards and kept getting opportunities. We had a little talk after the first quarter about our defense and held (Elma) to two points in the second quarter and took command of the game. Just a really good defensive effort.”

Standouts Jillie Dalan and Tieander Olson led Monte with 18 and 15 points, respectively, while senior Ali Parkin had her best game of the season with nine points on Senior Night.

Tumwater 51, Aberdeen 29

Aberdeen couldn’t find enough offense in a 51-29 loss to Tumwater in a 2A Evergreen Conference game on Wednesday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (4-13, 2-7 2A Evergreen) scored just five points in the first half to trail 22-5 at halftime before finding a more offensive rhythm in the second half.

Aberdeen was led by sophomore guard Bentley Brown with 16 points and went 9 for 44 from the field (20%) and 6 of 18 from the free-throw line (33%).

“We just didn’t shoot well,” Aberdeen head coach Curtis Eccles said. “With school being out the last two days prior to the weekend, it may have shown a little bit having four days off. We were definitely rusty shooting. … Hopefully we can bounce back and shoot the ball better at home.”

Aberdeen closes out the regular season with a league game against Black Hills at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats will then play at Washougal in the 2A District 4 pigtail play-in game on Wednesday.
