Aberdeen places 14th overall at state meet

District-champion Anna Matisons leads the way, placing fifth in 100 breaststroke

Led by a top five finish from district-champion Anna Matisons the Aberdeen Bobcats placed as one of the top 15 teams in the state at the conclusion of the WIAA 2A State Girls Swim & Dive Championships on Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Matisons swam the 100 yard breaststroke final in a time of 1:10.14, nearly 1.5 seconds better than her district-winning time, to place fifth overall — Aberdeen’s highest placement at the meet.

Matisons also swam the second leg of Aberdeen’s 200 medley relay team that placed eighth with a time of 2:01.43, joining teammates Litzy Orona, Mija Hood and Keara Burns on the medal stand.

Hood placed in the top 15 in two individual events. The freshman placed 10th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.37 and 14th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.37.

Burns also competed in an individual event, finishing 22nd in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.60.

Aberdeen’s 400 freestyle relay team of Hood, Burns, Orona and Kennedy Hatton placed 12th in the state with a time of 4:09.31.

The Bobcats amassed 56 points to finish 14th overall out of 35 2A teams at the state meet.

“It has been a fun season with an amazing group of girls,” Aberdeen head coach Tiffany Montoure said.
