School bus involved in three-vehicle crash in Hoquiam Friday

15-year-old student taken to the hospital with head and neck pain

A Hoquiam school bus with five students on board was involved in a three-vehicle collision in the 500 block of Emerson Avenue Friday afternoon, according to a statement from Hoquiam Police Sgt. Jeff Salstrom.

Salstrom said an investigation revealed the 40-year-old Hoquiam bus driver was following too closely and rear-ended a Toyota pickup as traffic had stopped on Emerson. The Toyota was then pushed into the rear of a 1997 Mercury driven by a 26-year-old Hoquiam man. The 37-year-old Seattle driver of the pickup complained of head, back and neck pain and was taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital.

One student, a 15-year-old Hoquiam girl, was taken to the hospital with head and neck pain, said Salstrom. The injuries to her and the Seattle man both appeared to be minor.

The bus driver was cited for following too closely. The remaining students on the bus were taken to the school district transportation office to be picked up by their parents.
