Highway 101 paving project through Hoquiam, Aberdeen complete

DOT: four-mile, $7.6 million project completed on time, budget

Work to improve sidewalk access and provide a smoother ride on nearly 4 miles of Highway 101 from downtown Hoquiam to the Heron Street Bridge in Aberdeen is complete.

Contractor crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation removed the last signs and equipment on Thursday, said Department of Transportation spokeswoman Christina Werner.

In addition to the sidewalk and roadway surface improvements, crews replaced worn expansion joints on the eastbound Highway 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge in Hoquiam.

“This stretch of highway had not seen resurfacing work in 20 years,” said project engineer Karen Boone. “This work extends the life of the highway, while reducing the need for costly emergency repairs.”

Construction began in February 2020. Bridge work was completed in September 2020. The $7.6 million project was completed on time and on budget, according to the department.
