Everyone’s invited to Weatherwax all-class reunion Aug. 4

This is a corrected version of the story that ran in Thursday’s The Daily World with the correct reunion date of Saturday, Aug. 4.

Alumni of Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen will gather Aug. 4 for an all-class reunion at the site of the original school, which was destroyed by fire in 2002.

Organizer Becky Carossino said response to the event has been positive.

“It’s been great. It’s mostly been through word of mouth, but we have done some posters and getting some spots on the radio, and we have an event page online,” she said. (The website is aberdeenallclassreunion.com.)

The event is not only a chance for Weatherwax alumni to get together and reminisce, but also a fundraiser for the Aberdeen Museum of History.

“My parents helped start the museum, and my mother volunteered there up until three weeks before she died at the age of 92,” said Carossino, a 1970 Weatherwax graduate.

She said her late husband, grandparents, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all attended school in Aberdeen.

The reunion will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the school’s original site at Third and I streets, across from the museum.

Music from generations past will be featured throughout the event. Carossino is still putting together the bands, which has been something of a challenge. So far she has a disc jockey lined up to play music from the 1910s to the ’30s; the Juliet Tango Band covering music from the 1940s and ’50s; Stan Foreman and the Aberdeen All Stars performing 1970s and ’80s tunes; and local favorites Black Ice and Electric Eye playing hits from the 1980s and ’90s.

Also included in the lineup is Elma musician Bruce Hughes from the legendary local group the Beachcombers.

“The guys from Black Ice and Electric Eye are also (Aberdeen) graduates, so I think it’s exciting they want to come and play,” said Carossino.

There will be a beer garden and food vendors on-site. So far she’s lined up Frontager’s wood-fired pizza truck; Nancy’s Bakery; and hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and water and soda from the Cosmopolis Lions Club.

Carossino also is inviting past and present Weatherwax staff members to the event for a group photo — everyone from teachers to janitors who has ever worked for the school.

Admittance is $15. Instead of a ticket, you’ll get a button that must be worn for entry to the event. Carossino said anyone of any age, Aberdeen graduate or not, is welcome to attend.
